The authors of the two papers. Carlos O. Miller standing on the left, looking down upon a couple of glass beakers. Opposite him, from the back to the front, are Malcolm H. van Saltza, Francis Shigeo Okumura, Folke K. Skoog and Frank M. Strong. Below the photo are the headers of their two papers describing kinetin, the first cytokinin: “Kinetin, a cell division factor from desoxyribonucleic acid” by Carlos O. Miller, Folke K. Skoog, Malcolm H. van Saltza and Frank M. Strong, and “Structure and synthesis of kinetin” by Carlos O. Miller, Folke K. Skoog, Francis Shigeo Okumura, Malcolm H. van Saltza and Frank M. Strong. Both published in 1955 in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

Really proud of this work led by Ruben Eichfeld! We show how a CBM domain gain/loss can rewire fungal chitinases, turning them from antifungal enzymes into immune-suppressing effectors that support plant symbiosis.

The main problem are the Scientists who continue to publish with such journals, using the lame cop-out that they need it to have a career. Nobody(!) needs a NatComs paper to have a career. They want the Nature logo on their paper to feed their ego. That's all.

Another great article by @mastroianni.bsky.social on the current #SciencePublishing system.
Don't publish with for-profit publishers like Elsevier, Springer Nature, et al. It's really simple. There are so many cool #PlantScience society journals. #SciPub

RNA splicing generates a functionally specialized Rep protein isoform in geminiviruses — enabling timely control of the viral cycle. Strikingly, similar strategies might have evolved in DNA viruses infecting different kingdoms: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... Spearheaded by @delphinem-p.bsky.social!

In this book, five scientists explore different channels for science communication and debate how strongly scientists can engage in the public discourse, all with the goal of inspiring scientists to find their own way of bringing science to the general public.
