Female Tawny Mining Bee (Andrena fulva) at Priston, near Bath. These colourful bees are one of the most easily recognisable solitary bees, and can be abundant in some area in early spring. Their nests resemble mini volcanos in bare earth.

NASA's Blue Marble picture of Earth, from 1972

NASA's Blue Marble picture of Earth, from 1972

It's only worth going back to the Moon if it makes us look properly again at Earth, and appreciate how beautiful, precious and fragile what we have here is. The most famous images from Apollo aren't about the Moon - they're pictures of Earth. We need to stop taking our home for granted.

Green, blue and brown eggs in a nest

Green, blue and brown eggs in a nest

Hunting for eggs this weekend? 🥚🐰 Some of the best eggs aren't chocolate! 🍫

Tinamous birds are relatively inconspicuous, but their eggs are egg-ceptional.

Researchers have taken steps to crack the code, 🐦determining that egg colour likely evolved as a mating signal.

A sure sign of spring 🌱 The Great Spotted Woodpecker may visit your garden, especially if it is near mature trees.

Listen for its drumming and look for black & white plumage with a red undertail 🪶

Seen one? Record it with Garden BirdWatch and help track its spread 📊

A lesser stag beetle, a surprisingly early find, on Horfield Common. They don't usually appear until May.

They need rotting wood, so you can help them by leaving log piles & fallen trees to rot.
