We canines claim moms' personal space as our own, but our cat sisfur does not. She is not a 'cuddle bug' like many other cats; she is an independent 'Ms. Cat to you' type.

In my new love affair with working out, I've met my addictive brain in a radically different setting from the mucky undergrowth that first sprouted it. I learned to be an addict in junk houses, dive bars, apartments with a single stained mattress on the floor as furniture; I've done coke off surfaces I wouldn't even sit on now. I've met WASP-type addicts in recovery whose alcoholism was rather a genteel thing, learned from parents over champagne toasts in Martha's Vineyard, but mine was always grubby and it was always secret: if a room could comfortably grow mushrooms along its dingy grouting, I could get high in it. Imagine my surprise at finding out that I can still get drunk in the fluorescently lit weight room at the Y, even without secrecy, even without liquor. I'm still doing it til it hurts. Til some as-yet-unexplored cave system inside myself floods with a familiar gushing pain, because hurting myself is the only way I've ever been able to know myself.
