I only really knew what I’d seen in movies and cartoons. Apparently, so did Buddy. Because, when I tried to walk him to the bathroom, he knew exactly what was about to happen, and he wasn’t having it. His legs scrambled, and he tried to run backwards. Capturing him, I picked him up like he was a large bag of rice and waddled my way toward the bathroom door, his body hanging from my arms like he was a petulant 6-year-old being dragged from the playground. As we reached the bathroom’s entrance, he spread out his four legs like he was a giant starfish and stopped us at the door frame. Holding his body with one arm, I peeled away each foot from the frame; of course, with one foot peeled, I’d grab the other, but the previous paw would go back to holding fast! So I had to wriggle while holding him to get him through the door. Once that was done, the next step would be easy! Unless of course he found a way to do it above the tub. Which, yes, he absolutely did -– all four legs were spread, holding fast to the edges of the tub, and there was no damn way I was getting him in there…in his opinion. It looked like a scene out of a cartoon (whether that be Tom & Jerry or SpongeBob is up to you, both are apt). I picked him up and plopped him down…but he was still somehow hovering over the tub. I grabbed him again, and, using my knowledge of ’80s karate power-moves, swept his legs. And somehow he still hovered over the tub. I built a giant slingshot, ran out into the street, loaded him onto it, and slungshot him through the open bathroom window. He still held fast to the sides of the tub, not getting in. I tried plying him with treats. I tried petting him and cooing in his ear, telling him he’s a good boy. I’m almost certain he rolled his eyes at me. Some peeling and some wriggling later, Buddy was in the tub! Funny enough, once he was in there, he was pretty chill.
He let me bathe him without a fight; heck, he seemed to even enjoy it. And so I rinsed him, lathered him up, and rinsed him again. The amount of dirt that dropped, dripped, and plopped off of him was shocking — the water wasn’t just dirty, it was downright muddy. A short-hair dog, I didn’t expect so much dirt to come off, but it was deep within his coat and undercoat. I think it took almost a half hour before the water was running clear.
Since it's another #ThrowbackThursday, I thought I'd post a BUDDY RHODES story -- a section from my #memoir about my 1st dog, for whom i HAD to learn behavioral training!
This is the CRAZY story of his VERY FIRST bath!

Black dog got on fine with Zig. Z corrected him for being too full on at the start but it levelled out. Just not sure if a dog this size for me, more food, a lot of energy, very eager to please, food driven but I think I need more low key dog #dogs #SkyDogs

![“We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Door.”
Buddy didn’t need me around to be a good police dog.
The super of our building in Riverdale was part of a particularly small and exclusive club: One of Buddy’s favorite people. Whenever he’d come by, Buddy would run over for some attention, giving him “the lean,” pressing his body to the super’s legs. If we saw our super on the way out of the building, he’d do the same.
The building super had a key to our apartment, and, while I was at work one day, he called and asked if he should let himself in to do a much-needed repair of my bathroom sink. I told him to go for it and to feel free to play with Buddy. What I didn’t expect was that Buddy wa’n’t playin’!
According to my building super, who called me at work with the details just a few minutes later, it went down like this: He let himself in with the spare key and Buddy dove at him, teeth bared! He quickly ran out, closing the door. The super tried to slowly open the door once more, thinking maybe Buddy needed a moment to recognize him. Y’know, Bud doesn’t usually get visitors in the middle of the day, but, surely, once he got a whiff of his good friend, Bud would chill out.

Buddy tried to take his hand off the second time. My dog continued to snarl and growl “like a wild bear.” The super, laughing while telling me of his harrowing experience, was shocked at how Buddy absolutely “wouldn’t let [him] in without [me] at home.” He added, still laughing, “And I’m too scared to try again.”
