Some big mathematical thinking for SDSA in #Leicester with teachers exploring activities that don't need a worksheet, just minimal resources and some intellectual prep about the questions you might ask.

The prompt "Share 24 counters in the following ratios." and "Do any have the same answer?"
A table with 25 different ratios, the bottom row requires simplification of the ratios.

In #MathsToday we did a task that creates the need for equivalent ratios.

We used counters, the bottom row is where the real fun starts.

Numicon was used to support the understanding of converting between the two. I chose to do this because I wanted them to have the experience of using concrete resources and build their knowledge using physical resources before moving onto worksheets. (Y5 teacher)

When asked "What have you found out in your classroom?" one replied:
Although they are becoming confident with multiplication they don’t seem to understand the link to division (Y4 teacher)

Had a very nice calm period 5 with Y7 doing some colouring in. I could hear the chaos of the elf game going on in the room next door and was very glad I’d gone for this instead! #MathsToday
