Plankton folk! I’m going through my β€˜mystery eggs and cysts’ folders and I’ve put together a document with them all together. If you think you might be able to help ID any of them, please let me know and I’ll send you a copy. Thanks! #marineplankton πŸ¦‘

Exploring variability in physiological traits between (and within) individual fish can help us understand how metabolic performance and growth rates change in response to factors like warming temperatures πŸ”₯

Viewpoint: A wild wilderness means unmanipulated Kevin Proescholdt writes, An untrammeled Wilderness would allow ecological and evolutionary forces to operate without restraint, modification, or manipulation.

"A recent piece by a U.S. Forest Service fire researcher supporting manipulating designated Wilderness areas showed a profound misunderstanding about Wilderness, its history, its stewardship policies, and the Wilderness Act itself." – Wilderness Watch

We found that while this species had impressive hypoxia tolerance, it did not meet the criteria for oxyconforming. However, we did see high interindividual variability in hypoxia tolerance - across 58 fish, no clear limit emerged!

Three stacked scatterplots showing oxygen uptake rate (metabolism) on the y-axis and dissolved oxygen as % saturation on the x-axis. This figure shows three exemplary traces, where SMR does not decline with decreasing DO along the theoretical oxyconforming line, but rather is maintained steadily even at low O2 levels.

This was an effort by the whole @clark-ecophys.bsky.social lab group to test the claim that G. maculatus is an β€œoxyconforming” species - basically, that its metabolism changes in balance with oxygen availability. We also tested whether exposure to salinity impacted hypoxia tolerance.

Estuarine fish face complex stressors, including highly variable salinity and oxygen availability 🫧

In a new paper, β€œThe impact of isosmotic conditions on the metabolism and hypoxia tolerance of a reportedly oxyconforming teleost,” we ask how common galaxias cope with these challenges 🐟

The speed with which salmon have returned to the Klamath - like the Elwha - after dam removal is overwhelmingly hopeful. And in both cases thanks to decades of tireless advocacy by local Tribes.

Attack on Camp Sovereignty: How ordinary fears are giving cover to extraordinary hate That is the story of these rallies: not just the extremists who thrive on attention, but the everyday people who give them cover.

Y’all, can anyone think of an example of an invasive species that we caused to be invasive and then introduced another species to get rid of it but that also ended up being invasive? Double invasive? Lol

Welcome to the Great Bear Sea After decades of discord, Canada and First Nations are working together to build a network of marine protected areas stretching from Vancouver Island to Alaska.

It feels like we're going backward, but there are hopeful projects underway, like the MPA network off the British Columbia coast. If done right, it β€œcould be a real, meaningful model for reconciliation” with First Nations. My latest in @biographic.bsky.social.

I was really moved by this figure from @drjessmt.bsky.social’s keynote address this morning at #ASFB2025

These changes are occurring faster and faster, with future generations facing #climatechange conditions that would be unthinkable to their ancestors, visualizing it like this makes it personal πŸ”₯
