We found that while this species had impressive hypoxia tolerance, it did not meet the criteria for oxyconforming. However, we did see high interindividual variability in hypoxia tolerance - across 58 fish, no clear limit emerged!

This was an effort by the whole @clark-ecophys.bsky.social lab group to test the claim that G. maculatus is an “oxyconforming” species - basically, that its metabolism changes in balance with oxygen availability. We also tested whether exposure to salinity impacted hypoxia tolerance.

Once abundant in California waters, the sunflower sea star was nearly wiped out by sea star wasting disease. The cause wasn't clear at first, but one culprit has been identified—a bacterium named Vibrio pectenicida. This finding may help scientists understand and control this disease.
