A pic I took of an area that some of the protagonists in Arrival, Part One of the Warriors of the Continuum, may have walked. #fantasy #trilogy

Progress Report February '26 - Joe Abercrombie A few days late, but I daresay that only serves to sharpen your keen anticipation for news of my progress, right? Right? Well, at least as far as books go, we grind forward, like Grond toward the gate...

“… how ever often I do this it never feels like a foregone conclusion that I’ll get there, believe me.”
From a recent blog from Joe Abercrombie, fantasy author, several million books sold. It provides a flavour of his process after he’s finished a first draft. joeabercrombie.com/progress-rep...

Thought #3. But hope that someone will like it!! 🖋️📖💰

Thought #2 comes from a discussion between authors Ryan Cahil and Joe Abercrombie. You are not aiming for mediocrity in your writing, you are aiming to push your unique voice. This can – will – be polarising, and so accept that not everyone will like your work. 🖋️📖💰

It was a big wake-up call. I’d been so stuck on editing/polishing my trilogy over the previous year that I’d lost sight of the critical need to tell let my mind free to write the story. 🖋️📖💰

After publishing my trilogy, I’ve been struggling writing my next book. These two fantasy authors, Ryan Cahill and Joe Abercrombie, reminded me last night that I should be focussing on getting the story down, and worry about the depth/prose etc on the second run through. 🖋️📖💰

Hosted by Waterstones, the ironic thing was that Cahill (who has sold over 1/2 million books over the last few years) hasn't seen a single one of his books in a physical store. And I couldn't find one on the shelves last night. A remaining chasm between indie and trad publishing.

Attended a great session with fantasy authors Ryan Cahill and Joe Abercrombie at Waterstones in Bath. Cahill is a storm of energy throwing out a myriad of ideas cut with self-deprecating wit. Paired with Abercrombie’s devilish humour, it made my journey across the rain-drenched country so worth it.

"The book LIFE is about just that, life itself, breakable but worth standing for, to keep on living at any cost." —Book Nerdection

The climactic part of this fantasy trilogy is out today, and reveals the true horror of the game of the gods. The Guardian must understand. This time, she must succeed.

For any fantasy, sci-fi, spec fiction writers out there, I'd thoroughly recommend Le Guin's 'The Language of the Night: essays on writing, science fiction, and fantasy'. Stimulating thoughts from a literary great.

To follow up on my own post, I'll add this brilliant book that I've just read: "The Language of the Night, Essays on Writing, Science Fiction, and Fantasy" by Ursula K. Le Guin. It is a collection of Le Guin's essays pulled together into one work by Susan Wood. It is a truly fascinating read.

Many thanks for your considered response, Robin. Great ideas. And yes, some of those old Le Guin interviews contain valuable nuggets!

Many thanks for the suggestion, Dianna. I'll take a look. 👍

Does anyone have any pointers to online resources – fee-paying or otherwise – that discuss the art of creative writing? Amongst other things, I've watched some of Brandon Sanderson's talks and dip into ACriticalDragon, both on Youtube, but wondered what else people have found enlightening. 🖋️📖💰

From my humble understanding of this, confusion arises from the use of the term 'flat' when applied to the universe. 'Flat' is not used in the sense that the universe is a plane, flat as a pancake. It is used as a descriptor to say that the universe has no curvature and follows Euclidean geometry.

Someone must have moved it,
‘Cos I saw it near me.
Never mind, fear not,
For it should be for all to see.

"The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down" by Haemin Sumin, Buddhist monk. I found this a wonderfully enlightening read. His thoughts helped free me to become a writer. #perspective #haeminsumin #followyourdreams

I watched an interview with Glen Cook, author of the Black Company etc. He said with a smile: “I know I will be writing probably on my deathbed because it’s just a compulsion, it’s something I have to do. Even if it’s not going to sell, I’ll do it. Because I have to do it.” #writerlife 🖋️📖💰

A moving and evocative tale of two sisters and the fate of the generations that followed. An unveiling of the worst of humanity and of the unbreakable spirit of those who endured. A magical weaving of the heartbreaking and the inspirational that captivated me and educated me.

On the heather covered hill top are the remains of an entrance grave. The eroded side entrance walls and the perched capstone are slabs of white porphyritic granite. The sea in beyond the cliff face is calm, the sky is overcast.

Over 4000 years ago, an island people left a tribute on the hillside with this entrance grave. A memorial to an individual? A communal shrine? Through the mists of time, the purpose has been obscured, yet the soul of those ancients lingers in the land.

So many galaxies, and within them, so many stars. Around those stars, planets. And on one particular planet in the vastness of the cosmos, a bee collects nectar and pollen to support its colony. To support Life. As its ancestors have done for over 100 million years. #lifeisprecious
