The graphic displayed shows a modern bred barley plant next to a historic landrace which has evolved in response to the local environmental conditions and management. There is a zoomed in section of both root systems which shows that the landrace has a larger zone of soil modification “Rhizosheath” than the modern barley.

Barley root system covered by a layer of soil that has been formed through a various physical and biological processes
