New findings from the FinnDiane study: central obesity in type 1 diabetes matters. Even a 0.1-unit increase in waist-to-height ratio was associated with a 21% higher risk of coronary artery disease, and the association was most pronounced among those without kidney disease. doi.org/10.2337/dc25...
New study! Our study is the first study to test whether early OCTA‑detected retinal microvascular changes relate to cognition in middle‑aged adults with T1D. We found that larger retinal abnormalities were linked to poorer working memory. www.clinicalkey.com#!/content/pl...

In middle-aged individuals with T1D, cerebral microbleeds were related to a subtle, yet systematic impairment in cognition. Results provide insight into the development of early cerebral small vessel disease-related cognitive changes already in midlife.

Individuals living with type 1 diabetes face a significantly elevated risk of myocardial infarction. A new study shows that the two main subtypes, STEMI and NSTEMI, behave differently over time.

STEMI rates are falling in type 1 diabetes 📉 but NSTEMI rates are not📈 New data from the FinnDiane cohort show these two myocardial infarction subtypes have distinct risk profiles, with microvascular complications playing a key role in NSTEMI @helsinki.fi ➡️ www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...
Our new #article on depression and adherence to cardioprotective medication in people with T1D is now published. Those prescribed cardioprotective therapy who had diagnosed depression or antidepressant purchases had higher odds of having poor rather than good adherence to cardioprotective therapy.
Huge congratiolations to Dr. Marika Eriksson for the second place in Finnish Diabetes Research Society's competition for the best thesis of the year! #ValtakunnallinenDiabetespaiva #diabetes #research

🌍✨Happy #WorldDiabetesDay!
💙 Today, we celebrate all people living with diabetes and the progress made in research, innovation and care
💪 Let’s continue to raise our voices, drive policy change and shape a future where no one is left behind.

Our new #article on diabetic kidney disease has been published! Using exome-wide analysis, the GENIE consortium identified a novel rare EXD3 variant linked to the diabetic kidney disease in T1D. Full study: www.kireports.org/article/S246...

Excited to share our latest #article! We conducted the largest NGS study to date on SDR in type 1 diabetes, identifying rare variants in genes like AFAP1L1, SLC30A9, HPS3, PELI1 and CSMD2.

Small panel of proteins can predict the onset and progression of diabetic kidney disease in type 1 diabetes as shown by Stefan Mutter #EASD2025 #proteomics
Raija Lithovius showed that key factors for rapid eGFR decline were largely similar across cohorts with different ethnic backgrounds but some differences exist and should be further investigated #EASD2025
Lifetime exposure to hyperglycemia and lipids are risk factors for heart failure in type 1 diabetes as presented by Rebecka Bergdal #EASD2025
Nadja Vuori found new genomic hits in her first-ever genome-wide association survival analysis in retinopathy and type 1 diabetes #EASD2025
Congratulations to Anniina Tynjälä for winning a best early career abstract at #EASD2025 for her work on the genetic background of arterial stiffness in type 1 diabetes
Krishna Adeshara presents our results with regards to genetics of protein glycation: genetic variants linked to advanced glycation end products were associated with higher risk of coronary artery disease in type 1 diabetes #EASD2025
Sara Itkonen showed that neuropathy is associated with the future strokes in type 1 diabetes in our cohort #EASD2025
Women with two or more children have fewer complications according to Kaarina Rimpeläinen who is presenting her results at the European Diabetes conference #EASD2025
