Mystery Radiolarian? - Found this in a sample from the south Pacific about 10 years ago - Still asking if anyone knows its name? #protistsonsky

Wishing you a smooth and speedy recovery! If the sample was taken from moss, then Difflugia manicata is most likely Heleopera lucida.

Both groups of protists, amoebae and ciliates, contain large species. Therefore, based on size alone, it could be either an amoeba or a ciliate.

A very interesting video! I believe this is a ciliate rather than an amoeba. However, a more accurate identification would be possible if we had footage showing the organismโ€™s active movement.

Iโ€™m glad to hear that you like the magazine! We recently went through a server migration, and some technical issues may have occurred during the transition. The issue will be resolved shortly.

This is the first time Iโ€™ve seen a starfish larva in samples from Cromer Pier, so Iโ€™m super excited. This is probably Asterias rubens and this is a bipinnaria stage larva. Iโ€™ve photostacked the images, itโ€™s not perfect, but it allows us to see all the bits of this very 3D larva. #plankton ๐Ÿฆ‘

Comparative Genomics Supports Sex and Meiosis in Diverse Amoebozoa Abstract. Sex and reproduction are often treated as a single phenomenon in animals and plants, as in these organisms reproduction implies mixis and meiosis

Another paper: doi.org/10.1093/gbe/...

1 year ago 0 0 0 0

Sexual reproduction is a poorly studied phenomenon in protists. There are several primitive forms of sexual reproduction, making it difficult to determine when they reproduce sexually and when asexually. Testate amoebae are a good example of such a case.
