My hiking companions today were #Birds along the #southplatteriver : #greatblueheron #spottedtowhee #blackcappedchickadee (who turned its back on the paparazzi) #commongoldeneye #mallard
Needed a break from the depressing, infuriating news... the sounds of #southplatteriver and this charming #Americandipper #ouzel was relaxing.
Walked thru a new (to me) prairie dog colony this morning in Cherry Creek State Park. Love listening to their chirps & barks & watching them interact. #prairiedogs
Sun setting on the South Platte River earlier this evening. Winter days are often chilly & daylight fades early but don't let that keep you inside. Get outside & enjoy some wildness each day.
I see them often & I am still amazed at how beautiful #Mallard ducks are!
A small dainty sulphur butterfly perches on a rock, finding shelter from the wind.
I wonder if this dainty sulphur will be my last #butterfly sighting of 2025. It was 62F today but a winter storm is supposed to blow in with snow tonight. Seen at Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge today.
Hey #bugsky artists - here's an opportunity with @pollinatororg.bsky.social to design their 2026 poster: www.pollinator.org/careers
This is wild -both the discovery & how they made the discovery: European bat preys on birds. www.sciencedaily.com/releases/202...
This will be an informative & inspirational event! Hope to see you there. www.coloradopollinatornetwork.org/summit-2025
#Autumn morning walk through a #cottonwood cathedral.
It was a warm, beautiful almost-autumn day in Colorado today.
A post about the National Wildlife Refuge System. This opinion piece gives a solid glimpse into life in FWS right now. It is written by a Friends group because our employees are not allowed to say it.
Hereโs the problem: as important as they are, refuges are low-key and low-profile.
Feels like spring, the tiny sweat bees & a gray hairstreak #butterfly were busy on the blooms in the native garden at Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge.

Forktail damselfly perched on a dried cattail leaf.
Common green darner dragonfly in flight.
Found my first odes of the season today at Rocky Mountain Arsenal Nat'l #Wildlife Refuge. Several common green darners & forktail #damselfly. The darners were in constant motion, so this is my best action shot. They were already mating - saw a pair flying tandem.

Thanks, I just showed this to him & you made his day!
A circular illustration of 19 colorful different species of invertebrates across various phyla (arthropods, cnidarians, echinoderms, sponges, mollusks, annelids, flatworms). Black arching text surrounding them reads โCelebrate Invertebrate Biodiversityโ. They are illustrated on a light blue background.
Happy #Invertefest! Celebrate invertebrate biodiversity ๐๐
I spotted my first #bumblebee of the season yesterday in Colorado. At least 3 #Bombus fervidus, feeding on golden banner.

My son is learning metalsmithing in college, the assignment was to create a box. He created "Detritivores" - a bronze & copper fallen log that opens to reveal 2 pill bugs underneath. It was selected for the student art show. #invertefest
