Yesterday we revisited the local mining bee banks where I previously claimed on iRecord (15.03.26) that there were up to 200 Yellow-legged Mining Bees present. However, this time there were at least 2000 of them, and more banks active. A wonderful sight.

Nearby, there are houses with garden banks abutting the road. Yesterday, 3 of them were buzzing with dozens of mining bees. Mostly Yellow-legged Mining Bees, but good numbers of Cliff Mining Bees. Best of all was seeing the crowd of Black Oil Beetles.

Cliff Mining Bee, Andrena thoracica, spotted on our walk yesterday. It didn't linger at any flower long enough for me to focus on on, and I didn't have time to try and get better footage as I had to keep up with the others.

A large brown bee is hanging off the end of a cluster of tiny cream blossoms. She has reddish blonde fur on her body and on the top of her head that is catching the sunlight, and auburn coloured wings.

A small bee, filling the photo frame as it rests on a large reed leaf. She is sitting with her wings algined along her body, with a yellow mark on the side of her abdomen just visible. She's mainly dark coloured, with some light fur on her thorax beneath the wing roots. Her antennae have a red band near the base, and yellow tips.

On a local walk, there are a couple of houses fronted by earthy banks which are home to mining bees. They’re currently buzzing with Andrena flavipes, hosts to the Painted Nomad Bee, Nomada fucata. I fear we have bee-bank envy.
