A male tawney mining bee sits on a leaf. On its head between its compound eyes, the 3 simple eyes, known as ocelli, can be seen. Maybe if you zoom in a little.

A male Tawney mining bee in my garden. The females are the pretty ones (as always ๐Ÿ˜„) and covered in beautiful orange fuzzy fluff. Perfect. The male here has no sting, and is a little slow. Bless.

One of the best things about having the flu is I'm finally catching up on pictures I should have sorted out weeks ago.

Here is a solitary bee who has decided that the middle of the path is an ideal spot for his home.

I wish them well :)

A bright yellow shaggy-petalled dandelion flower on which a medium sized golden-orange bee is sitting. She has impressive flowing orange hairs on her hind legs, a more tawny thorax and her abdomen has tawny-interspersed-with-more-blond hairs on. She looks dopey but tidy and fresh, and she is a real live bee on a flower in February!

I know you folks in eastern USA are still wrapped in your woollies (stay safe!), but here in the UK it is getting warmer and brighter and the first solitary bees are out! Andrena bicolor female today! #SolitaryBee #Entomology #FirstBeesOfSpring #Bee #Pollinator

#SolitaryBee season open - signs of hatching around the hotel and if you look carefully you can see the white moustache of an orchard mason bee. Not much pollen about but cherry plum is coming into flower and the snowdrops are out and about. Forecast bit wet though... @ianbeavis.bsky.social

My linocut print shows a section of leaf with an alfalfa leaf cutter bee in the act of cutting its telltale half-moon shape. The leaf is a pale green with dark green veins and patterns and much paler obverse site. The bee is black and pale yellow. My print is on cream coloured Japanese paper with bark inclusions.

I made a full edition of my alfalfa leafcutting bee (Megachile rotundata) cutting a leaf. The alfalfa leafcutting bee is a solitary bee originally from Europe which has been spread to all continents but Antartica for agriculture. ๐Ÿก๐Ÿงช๐Ÿ

A portrait profile shot of a bees head and thorax. The bee is looking to the right, with a green/blue background. It's covered in fine hairs, from pale yellow to orange in colour. The whole of the bee is in focus allowing details like the occeli on it's head to be clearly visible. It's tongue is extended, with the central glossa having a bottlebrush like structure on the end. The labial palpa, which extend either side of the glossa to help form a tube to drink nectar, are also visible, as are the galea which support the tongue when it's in use.

An alternative photo of the Orange Vented Mason #bee that I recovered from the nest tubes. I think this lighting, and background is better for showing off the details of his mouthparts. #wildlifefrommywindow #invertebrates #insects #solitarybee #gardenwildlife #ukwildlife

When I cleaned out the bee nests in Oct this โ™‚๏ธ Orange Vented Mason #bee (correct me if I'm wrong!) was in a tube, having died at the back. I kept him for some ๐Ÿ“ท, this is a focus-stacked composite of 40+ pics. I love the detail on his tongue! #wildlifefrommywindow #solitarybee #invertebrates #insects
