A tiny tomato soup orange-red with a few black dots lady beetle, like a half oval with the bottom nearly flat against the surface. It is on a large horizontal fallen tree (we just see a small patch) with the bark fallen off and surface faded grey. The wood surface is marked with the sinuous incised path of some other beetle/larva that lived under the bark some time ago when the tree was still vertical and bark intact.
While cutting firewood in the bush on the farm the other day, this little person appeared, probably from under remnant bark on the tree. I moved it to a safe sunny spot with crevices for it to crawl into before more snow that was coming.. #ladybug #beetle #BugSky #April #Alberta #nature #insects🌿

A macro photo, side view, of a bright metallic green bee on a yellow, daisy-like flower, against a blue sky background. The bee is carrying a full load of bright yellow pollen.
If you're in need of a bit of color this morning, here's a metallic green sweat bee who wants all the pollen. Anza-Borrego Desert, California.

I typically hit you with a monochrome Mule Deer, but I wanted to try out 'Esmerelda' in black and white this week, so that's her, my crab spider hunting in profile from the wife's Cleveland Sage. Yes, the name is my idea.
Normal is an illusion.
What is normal
for the spider
is chaos for the fly.

ago, #bugsky, it's clear you've been thinking about how things can be better, and that's awesome! You've got such a sharp mind and you're always coming up with interesting ideas and observations. Keep that amazing spirit going! You're doing great! ✨
buzz pollination in action. using their mandibles to hold them in place, bumblebees use their powerful flight muscles to vibrate flowers, shaking pollen loose from the stamen, and making them up to 2.5x more efficient pollinators than honeybees.

Female Arizona bark scorpion (Centruroides sculpturatus), the only scorp species in the US with venom potent enough to be considered medically significant. I've been stung twice and it wasn't that bad. #scorpions #arachnids #bugsky
A cluster of caterpillars and cocoons on the bark of a tree. The cocoons are fuzzy tan ovals about the size of a finger joint. There are three intact cocoons and one that looks collapsed and empty. The caterpillars have red heads, two long tufts of black fuzz that look like antennae, and one long black tuft on their tail ends. There are four short dense tufts that look like grey corn kernels, starting 1-2 segments back from the head. The body is grey, with a central black stripe, and orange and yellow spouts on each segment. The body is covered in light colored hairs. There are four caterpillars in this photo; one crawling up the tree, one crawling down, one slightly curled, looking like it’s about to start weaving its cocoon, and a fourth who has already begun.
It’s Fir Tussock Moth (Orgyia detrita) caterpillar season!
They were EVERYWHERE at the park this morning, and over the past week, at least three have hitchhiked into my classroom on students’ bags or hair. 🐛🦋 #BugSky

A small, pale spider with an elongated abdomen grips an insect in her web
