Happy #WorldMicroscopeDay! 🔬
Today, we have 9 stunning materials science images for you, celebrating this day in 1625 when the term " #microscope " was first used!
For example, this image of modified #moon 🌑 soil!

Excited to share my first first-author publication!! HyPhy is a Python-based tool for studying fungal hyphal networks, opening new doors to connect fungal architecture with genetic and environmental factors.
Interested in learning more about how Botrytis cinerea overcomes host defenses? Check out our new preprint, where we expose a diverse population to linalool to uncover the genetic basis of resistance: doi.org/10.64898/202... ! 😎
Melanie Madrigal, a grad student in the @lsu.bsky.social Dept of Biological Sciences in Jordan A. Dowell's lab, has an odd lab “pet”: a #fungus known as gray mold or Botrytis cinerea. She’s working to characterize its growth under different conditions - with images!

Looking through one of the four windows of the Orion spacecraft, a tiny crescent Earth is illuminated against the blackness of space and grows smaller as the crew journeys closer to the Moon. Part of the window edge is visible; the rest is darkness. [Alt-text slightly revised from ESA/NASA version]

Víctor García-López points to light-tunable molecule that can control the permeability of a membrane to ions.
Víctor García-López describes how we can control the shape of a lipid vesicle via light-tunable molecules that control the membrane permeability.

The future of #computing might look a lot like... #chemistry.
LSU researchers have developed soft membranes that can be controlled with light ⚡ to work as resistors or capacitors with MEMORY 💽. They may be useful for neuromorphic 🧠 computing.

SkelPy is a Python-based graphical user interface that skeletonizes images of hyphal networks and extracts biologically relevant structural parameters. Now published! bsapubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/... #fungi @lsuscience.bsky.social
The shape of branching networks, like the roots of a tree or the filamentous growths of a fungus, can tell us about their function. How do growth conditions or genetics impact the network shape? LSU researchers have created a tool that “skeletonizes” #fungi to reveal the network!
