New paper out in @natureportfolio.nature.com @commsearth.nature.com!
A major bottleneck in coral restoration is that newly settled corals rarely survive.
We show that simple engineered substrates can increase early-stage survivorship by ~4×.

ISOP-sponsored symposium on protistan symbioses across the Tree of Life went fantastic! Thanks all contributors (Ondrej, Gillian, and @mixotrophe.bsky.social) and the best co-host, @nicolecoots.bsky.social! #ProtistsOnSky @protistologyopen.bsky.social
Finding molecular tags that localise fluorescent proteins to the cell membrane was the goal of our latest paper, now published in Development @dev-journal.bsky.social. The tags act as address labels, sending proteins to the cell membrane, where they highlight the shape and arrangement of cells. 2/9
New OpenFold3 preview out! (OF3p2)
It closes the gap to AlphaFold3 for most modalities.
Most critically, we're releasing everything, including training sets & configs, making OF3p2 the only current AF3-based model that is functionally trainable & reproducible from scratch🧵1/9
And a role model to many people who’ve never had a chance to meet him!
Out in @natmethods.nature.com: More dyes. They work. Quite well. And blink. Pick the one that fits your target, your technique, and your labeling density. With too many collaborators and institutes to list, but anchored at @hhmijanelia.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Régis Giet showed that, in Drosophila neural stem cells, the number of astral microtubules nucleated by each centrosome determines the spindle position. Asymmetric pushing forces, rather than cortical pulling, dominate spindle positioning. #SpindleCroatia2026
Jacques Pécréaux used FRAP of the half-spindle in C. elegans and revealed that only kinetochore microtubules exhibit flux, sliding along pole-anchored ones. The flux is larger on the posterior side, reflecting the imbalance in cortical pulling forces. #SpindleCroatia2026
Monica Gobran showed that when CDK1 is partially inhibited, nuclear pores begin to disassemble, but the overall structure of the nuclear envelope remains intact, similar to closed mitosis. The spindle forms outside the nucleus. #SpindleCroatia2026
Marija Žanić @zaniclab.bsky.social used EB1 imaging to determine the relationship between microtubule GTP-cap size and growth rate throughout the cell cycle. GTP-cap size for matching growth rates drops during mitosis, suggesting active regulation of the hydrolysis rate. #SpindleCroatia2026
Arp Schnittger @schnittger-lab.bsky.social examined kinetochores in plant meiosis, focusing on how mono‑orientation of sister kinetochores is achieved. Arabidopsis has a homolog of Csm1, a monopolin component, with a function in kinetochore organization and mono‑orientation. #SpindleCroatia2026
Gautam Dey @gautamdey.bsky.social discussed spindle evolutionary dynamics. In Chlamy, an MTOC forms in prophase to nucleate the spindle, but remains tethered to the basal bodies. By using ExM, they plan to expand every microbial eukaryote on Earth! #SpindleCroatia2026

Wei Ming Lim from the Surrey lab @surreylab.bsky.social reconstituted fluxing anaphase-like mini-spindles by using only 4 purified proteins: tubulin, PRC1, KIF4A, and kinesin-5. #SpindleCroatia2026
Andrea Musacchio @andrea-musacchio.bsky.social talked about the hardware and the operating system of the human kinetochore. He showed that SKA binds to a new hinge formed by NUF2 and NDC80. #SpindleCroatia2026
Rumen Stamatov @rstamatov.bsky.social presented his amazing method for tracking individual chromosomes with microscopy and deep learning, revealing a chromosome flow field in prometaphase, compaction kinetics of chromosomes, and their locations in mother and daughter cells. #SpindleCroatia2026
Meredith Betterton showed that PRC1 accumulation at overlap edges drives PRC1 tilting, tighter spacing of the microtubules, and more resistance to sliding forces. Motor-crosslinker force balance sets the microtubule separation. #SpindleCroatia2026
Bonnibelle Leeds developed simulations of biorientation in yeast, which predict rapid biorientation. Error correction occurs due to four mechanisms: catch bond, Aurora, geometric bias, and direction-sensitive grip. #SpindleCroatia2026
Thomas Müller-Reichert showed that in C. elegans embryos, spindle length scales with cell size, but chromosome segregation dynamics remain constant. In RPE1 cells, 11-12 microtubules are attached end-on to each kinetochore, and monopolar spindles have a twist. #SpindleCroatia2026
