Join us today for the launch of Carolina Microscopy, the unified microscopy cores at UNC Chapel Hill!
We have 4 locations: the Biology Microscopy Core (director @nat-prunet.bsky.social), The Hooker Imaging Core (director @fishcscells.bsky.social), the Microscopy Services Laboratory (director Pablo Ariel) and the Neuroscience Microscopy Core (director @michelleitano.bsky.social)
Carolina Microscopy provides the UNC community with access, training and support for a wide array of high-end light microscopy, electron microscopy and image analysis systems.

Welcome to Carolina Microscopy, the unified microscopy core facilities at UNC Chapel Hill!
Cover image: Pictured is a regenerating root from an Arabidopsis thaliana leaf. Akansha Ganguly et al. detached plant leaves to study the mechanisms of stress mitigation associated with wound repair. The authors found that plant-specific PLETHORA transcription factors activate the ATG8 gene, which initiates recycling of damaged cell components to decrease intracellular stress and allow stem cells to differentiate. ATG8 is not activated if the plant is simply forming a callus, rather than regenerating roots. The results reveal how plant-specific autophagy regulators interact with intracellular stress signaling to aid in wound repair. See the article by Ganguly et al., e2513954123. Now on the Cover @pnas.org News, Delightful to see @akanshaganguly.bsky.social Journey from stress to regeneration, from leaf to root featured on cover. Akansha, you made it, very well done, congratulations.
Have you submitted your abstract yet for the 21st International Microscopy Congress? #IMC21 (Deadline *tomorrow* 20 March)
Here's IMC21 Chair, Professor Nigel Browning, explaining why you should definitely be joining the global #microscopy community in Liverpool this summer!

Just because it's Monday, we love #microscopy & we love #mitochondria, the powerhouse of the #cell
We videoed mito under the microscope to see their dynamics.
Here they join forces!
Ofc we <3 the other #organelles too (to prevent jealousy)

Although the world outside still feels grey and wintry, under the microscope the retina reveals a vibrant landscape of color.
For #FluorescenceFriday: a section of the avian retina showing beautifully organized neuronal layers from inner to outer retina.

EDTA and tequila (2024)
Separate bubbles.
Alone, they exist. Together, they matter.
This image captures bubbles of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) dissolved in tequila, where light radiates from each sphere and visually connects them into a single network.
Cells rarely know they are being photographed. Scientists do👩🏻🔬
Our CellArt Gallery brings together those moments when research pauses for a second and simply looks amazing.

😍
Students love it and so do I! It really helps biologists understand concepts like conjugate planes that seem rather abstract to them in lectures
Thx for @mollyherring.bsky.social for featuring our recent work with @centriolelab.bsky.social and our quest with @gautamdey.bsky.social & the support of the @moorefound.bsky.social to look for the beauty in every #eukaryote out there using #Expansion #Microscopy #UExM

Microscopy image of a developing mouse lung. Cells that express Shh are shown in green. Membranes of non-expressing cells are magenta.
Happy #FluorescenceFriday! I've shared this before but am reposting b/c I think the developing #lung is just so darn pretty! Scientists captured the exact moment cardiac cells self-organize into a coordinated rhythm—seconds before the first heartbeat.
Early beats are irregular and shift in origin, yet spread coherently across the heart.
