There are so many forces in our lives that require us to claim that we are the best; world leaders. It’s so refreshing to hear someone talk about “middle powers” and to have the confidence to self identify as that while knowing that it does not diminish the importance of their voice and opinion.

What odds do we have for Bottomley Potts rectifying his first innings rubbishness with a match winning 7-for?

Looking forward to reading this one. NMR, IDPs and XH/pi interactions all in one paper
There’s not enough #cricket on my BlueSky feed this morning 🏏
Photos from the CCPN 2025 conference session on the use of NMR in protein design and engineering research showing speakers Clara Schoeder, Amy Guo, Clement Degut and Magnus Wolf-Watz
I really enjoyed the #Protein Design and Engineering session at the @ccpnmr.bsky.social summer meeting. I've summarised the discussion points on LinkedIn (tinyurl.com/2thdjew4). Is NMR underused? It would be great to hear people's thoughts ...

It’s the 25th anniversary of edition of the @ccpnmr.bsky.social summer conference and it’s time for the traditional #ceilidh. I suppose this is what a bunch of #NMR spectroscopists in intermediate exchange looks like.
Perhaps the most noise-tolerant parent ever? This song thrush made its nest in a not-so-quiet nook under a slide in a noisy adventure playground 🪺

Photos taken during a walk around Castle Howard in Yorkshire, UK; including the house, fields and a peacock
Gary Thompson and I tested out a walk around #CastleHoward for the @ccpnmr.bsky.social meeting which is taking place @york.ac.uk this summer.
The line-up includes protein design, peptides, hyperpolarisation, a keynote, and poster sessions.
Plus a great walk too

It's not often that I find similarities between working in #academia and working as a #spy for the security services, but this line about reimbursement of travel expenses in John le Carré's 2019 novel sounds very familiar.
There's a #coffee outlet in Spark in #York called #vi. They make nice coffee and they make me think of my favourite #unix text editor.
(though their website tells me that isn't why they chose the name)
Last few days to apply for our @cancerresearchuk.org funded post in cancer immunogenomics. Closes Sunday.

Didn’t Dundee make £40m from selling its share in Exscientia in 2024?

There was a stunning (nearly?) full moon 🌕 over University of #York tonight complete with #BobRoss-esque shimmering reflection on the lake
I wish my lab had a “spectomofer”. Imagine the work we could do 🧪
Major news alert: I've slightly updated my departmental webpage:

Rest assured, the photo is still 10 years out of date.
It’s the cat’s birthday today which means he gets his two favourite things as a present: a ribbon and a couple of q-tips

Nice to see @yorkgin.bsky.social on here. Here’s a #martini 🍸 photo to say hello
After a week of cold weather in #York it’s starting to warm up a bit, which means beautiful misty sunrises on the bike ride to work
Beautiful sunrise over @bangoruniversity.bsky.social this morning. Heading to the 2nd day of the UK #Archaea meeting. It’s been great so far, so many cool stories and interesting conversations.
A quick update: as noted by @pbnjay.com our GitHub is still a work in progress. We’re in the process of adding all of the necessary material to reproduce our microscope. Please do continue to check-in and also to ask any questions of @cdegut.bsky.social and me.

I’ll write more about this pre-print in the next few days, but please do take a look at this piece of work by Clément Dégut. It’s a 3D-printed open-source microscope that can image microtitre plates. Ideal for anyone looking for a new #DIY #science project

More mist but this time in #Grenoble
Still lots of fog in #York. Great for moody photos of obliging swans

I am. Please add me to the list.
It’s the YSBL (not yet on BlueSky) Xmas party and it’s quiz time. The theme? Guess the price of the item on the University purchasing system. So, how much does 10 mL of “wine” cost from Merck? Is it red? Is it white? No, it’s “wine”. 🍷🎄
An advert for a PhD project on new approaches to protein library screening
We're looking for a #PhD student for Oct 2025 entry.
If you're interested in a highly interdisciplinary project that aims to develop new approaches for screening protein libraries (e.g. nanobodies) then please get in touch.
4-year, fully-funded studentship via BBSRC Yorkshire Bioscience DTP.
