Tonight's aurora was pretty extraordinary. Here is a real-time video showing the rapid motion and vivid colors. All I could do while watching this was smile and laugh.. it's a pretty unique feeling seeing the sky move like this. Good night!

Earth has two crowns - both auroral ovals were imaged by the Artemis II crew today, pretty amazing to see this perspective.

Here I have zoomed in on both auroral ovals so you can see more clearly the green emissions extending around 100 km into our thermosphere/ionosphere.

As Hawaiʻi moves into the recovery phase, one thing has been clear from the start: this WCK response has been community-led. Local organizations, churches, farmers, and volunteers mobilized immediately—showing up for neighbors before outside help arrived. #ChefsForHawaii (1/3)

Our role has been to support & complement that effort. By working through local partners and following the lead of people who know their communities best, we've been able to help expand what was already happening on the ground. We're grateful to have been welcomed as a partner. #ChefsForHawaii (2/3)

Animation from the HUXt model showing 8 CMEs firing off the Sun. Five of them have any appreciable chance of impacting Earth with the first impact predicted by this model to occur early on March 20 UT time (Thursday night). Be aware that this is a day later than NOAA SWPC.

Woohoo! The CME has arrived and so has the aurora! Substorm just started now, and we have some dancing off towards the north! Not a bad show.

The solar wind magnetic field strength is around 11 nT now--the CME (likely associated with the anticipated M2.79 flare) has arrived and is intensifying a bit! The Bz remains positive, but with a -Bz, views of the aurora could intensify at high latitudes.

NOAA SWPC has released their ENLIL model of the M2.7 CME. It is directed pretty squarely at Earth with impact predicted for March 19 8 UT (3 am CDT Thursday). The timing is not too great for North America, but the CME could arrive earlier or later than the prediction.

If the CME arrives on time, you would need to be out already on Wednesday night hoping for impact around 3 am CDT. Then, mid-latitude auroral displays may begin immediately after arrival with continued shows dependent on the Bz condition inside the magnetic cloud.

Beautiful aurora tonight over Fairbanks--check out this giant auroral spiral! Great show earlier with the arrival of the coronal hole.

Whoa, we are nearing 100 GW of auroral power on the OVATION model. This model is very sensitive to solar wind speed, and south Bz, which is why we are seeing shades of yellow orange and red tonight.

Wow, impressive solar, wind conditions right now! The solar wind speed is over 650 km/s, and the Bz has been sold for some time charging up geomagnetic conditions to moderate storm levels (G2/Kp 6).

Coronal hole effects begin with the onset of a compression region (high solar wind density and magnetic field) called a CIR (co-rotating interaction region). These structures present the best chances for mid-latitude auroral activity. We may see a CIR sometime on March 13-14.

Large coronal hole is currently facing Earth. We are expecting the first signs of fast solar winds hitting our planet sometime tomorrow or Saturday. Minor geomagnetic storms may spark intense high-latitude auroral displays and minor mid-latitude shows during substorm times.

Aurora over Beaver, Alaska

NOAA SWPC has issued a G1 watch for February 23, but since CH26- seems to have arrived early, G1 conditions could happen any time. We may see solar wind speeds increase to around 700-800 km/s. High-latitude viewers should have a great time with this enhancement!

It seems like we may be connected to the large coronal hole currently facing Earth now as the solar wind is now blowing at nearly 600 km/s. We reached G1 minor storm conditions last night with some minor mid-latitude auroral displays over the northern U.S.

A large, negative-polarity coronal hole has rotated onto the Earth-facing disk. This may provide us with some chances for mid-latitude aurora and active high-latitude displays starting around Feb 23-25. The polarity is favorable for the RM effect which is becoming more relevant.

Earth-directed CME is inbound! A filament eruption near the center of the Earth-facing disk (and associated with a C1 flare) produced a CME heading in our direction.

Impact has been modeled for Feb 18 afternoon (UTC) or Wednesday morning for NA timezones. G1-G2 potential.
