This image illustrates how combining perennial genes with prostrate growth genes allows cultivated rice to mimic wild rice.
Wild rice is a perennial, creeping plant. The secret to its perennial growth habit lies in a developmental reversal directed by small RNAs. This image illustrates how combining perennial genes with prostrate growth genes allows cultivated rice to mimic wild rice.

The image is an announcement for a new publication from the MSU Plant Resilience Institute. At the top, a green banner displays the title "NEW PRI PUBLICATION" in bold white text. Below is the paper title in white over a textured green background: “Variability in drought gene expression datasets highlights the need for paired physiology and community standardization.” Two circular headshot photos on the left show a man and a woman. To the right are six bar charts in a grid depicting various data related to plant resilience. Each chart has a title: "Plant age," "Environment," "Media," "Stress duration," "Mechanism of drying," and "Paired physiology datasets." Text at the bottom, states: "VanBuren et al., Plant Physiology (2026).” Logos for Michigan State University and the Plant Resilience Institute are at the bottom left.
How comparable are plant drought studies, really? In a new @plantphys.bsky.social paper, a team of Plant Resilience Institute scientists, led by @bobvanburen.bsky.social, reanalyze hundreds of drought gene expression datasets and introduce new ML tools. #PlantScience

When Penny Pride, left, urgently needed a kidney, her friend, Anh Nguyen, right, stepped in to help. Photo credit: Annie Pierce, UC San Diego Health
First, a kidney for a close friend. Then part of her liver for a child she’d never met. Anh Nguyen’s rare journey as the first double living organ donor at UC San Diego Health reveals how one person’s generosity can transform multiple lives, including her own. ➡️ https://bit.ly/4ap2anm

Holy shit: it's an RFP for the NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Biology (PRFB). Hello old friend www.nsf.gov/funding/oppo...
I started offering career advice to two junior colleagues today in separate meetings, and both times I caught myself thinking that, if I'm honest, I don't have very good advice on navigating the current funding and job climate. I think it's important to say that no one does.
Lovely

An Arabidopsis leaf-infection assay with Alternaria alternata showing lesions on Col-0, defenseless (abi1-1 coi1 eds1 ein2 rbohD sid2) and cyp79b2b3 plants. The lesions are worst on cyb79b2b3, intermediate on the defenseless plant, and least on Col. Similarly, plants infected with Pseudomonas syringae show strongest susceptibility in an eds1 sid2 background, medium susceptibility in defenseless, and least in Col.
Interesting that a 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 mutant (𝘢𝘣𝘪𝟣-𝟣 𝘤𝘰𝘪𝟣 𝘦𝘥𝘴𝟣 𝘦𝘪𝘯𝟤 𝘳𝘣𝘰𝘩𝘋 𝘴𝘪𝘥𝟤) is less sensitive to fungal infection than a 𝘤𝘺𝘣𝟩𝟫𝘣𝟤/𝘣𝟤 mutant (Similarly, 𝘦𝘥𝘴𝟣 𝘴𝘪𝘥𝟤 is more susceptible to bacterial infection than the 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴).
