Those have both always seemed completely fine to me

I was explicitly trained that introspective judgments are not valid data points but as a native speaker of New Zealand English I would often find the supposedly uncontroversially acceptable examples odd. I vividly recall when I encountered “in back of” in a paper on prepositions. Nuh uh.
A male Anna's hummingbird sits on a diagonal branch. His feathers are fluffed up (it was a cool morning).
A male Anna's hummingbird at Pier Park, New Westminster BC. I often see him early in the morning. He sits there having a moment of quiet before he heads off to start his work day.

that'd be fun!
A Hooked Net-winged Beetle about to take flight. It's elytra (the coverings over the wings) are open and its body is curving upward as its legs lift of the stick it had been standing on.

A Pacific tree frog is sitting on a log, hunched down with its front feet tucked in. We are viewing it from the front. It is looking straight at us.

A Northern red-legged frog. Its body is mostly in the water, with just its head sticking out. It is leaning against a green rock. It is in spot of light surrounded by dark shadows - I had to use 1/15 second exposure.

A green frog hidden among the reeds. You can clearly see the dorso-lateral ridge (the line that runs from its ear drum along the side of the body), which distinguishes it from a bullfrog.

A Western painted turtle basks in the sun on some dead brown leaves on the short of Burnaby Lake.
A passer-by asked me if this was "one of the good ones" so I told them that yes, it's a native Western painted turtle and not one of the invasive red-eared sliders.

A signal crayfish, identified by the bright white fleck on its front left pincer is nibbling on an orange segment that someone (not me!) has dropped into the stream. I see this crayfish from time to time -- it is missing its right pincer.
Here's something I bet you've never seen before: a signal crayfish nibbling on an orange segment.
I suppose even crustaceans need vitamin C.

A close up of a few dozen Northwestern salamander eggs. One egg is bright white and solid -- possibly not fertilized. The others have little tadpoles that are beginning to take shape. They look like little manatees.

A barred owl looking down on me thru the branches.
I was hiking in Pinecone Burke Provincial Park. A hiker emerged from a side trail that I didn't even know was there, saw my camera gear and excitedly took me to see this barred owl (I think) sitting high in a tree.

I am not aware of efforts to eradicate the invasive green frogs and bullfrogs. I think effort is focused on habitat restoration, since environmental issues have a profound impact on the native species.
Yes they’re cute but compete with the native species.
