A few notes on Birmingham…

I am desperately awaiting that sound in Birmingham!
I had the totally life-affirming experience of going to a bird-ringing session and holding a goldcrest.
We also got close to blue tits, great tits, a wren, a magpie, and this little long-tailed tit beauty. What brilliant work the bird ringers do to help future generations!

They’re all so good, but there’s something very satisfying about that wood pigeon!
A grey weekend at RSPB Leighton Moss but still a total treat! Highlights included a Merlin, a Spotted Redshank, and a Marsh Harrier soaring over the reedbeds.
The Lapwings suddenly took off and livened up the dull skies 😊

Signs of a new season ahead…this blue tit was investigating its potential new home for a long time today!

Not a bad @rspb.bsky.social Big Garden Birdwatch for me this year in Birmingham, although fewer of each type than usual!
4 blue tits
1 great tit
1 coal tit
1 long-tailed tit
1 nuthatch
1 dunnock
1 wood pigeon
4 house sparrows
1 goldcrest
1 robin (overseeing proceedings of course)
Time to write up the notes from my trusty little field book...

Snow half a welly deep in south west Birmingham today!
Other than black-headed gulls bobbing in the water, there were 5 great crested grebes, ca20 cormorants, and a couple of tufted ducks near the shore.
The fields were mostly silent, only a volery of long-tailed tits and (of course) a robin!
Caught the very last of the sunlight at Woodgate Valley today. Birds were very quiet around the horse paddocks…a few Redwing in the tree tops, a couple of Wrens making themselves heard, and this Robin and Dunnock hopping around by the main path ✨
We put the food tray out last night as the snow covered the usual natural food sources - and our regular fox visitor brought a friend for the first time 🦊🦊

A golden sunset over a calm reservoir, with snow-dusted hills and silhouetted trees on the horizon as dozens of Black-headed Gulls fly across a clear evening sky.
Watching the Black-headed Gulls fly in to roost on Bartley Green Reservoir is quite a sight against a brilliant winter sunset!
A snow day at Harborne Reserve saw lots of feeder activity: Long Tailed Tits, Greenfinches, Chaffinches, and a Bullfinch. Redwing and Tree Creepers nearby too.
A green woodpecker was calling but remained hidden amongst the trees. And, as always, the grey wagtail was hopping about in the brook!
A dull, winter solstice late afternoon brought to life by this magnificent starling murmuration!
“Do you think all the starlings on earth are here?” asked my 8-year-old niece
