Photo of a single Elf or Ruby Elf-cup fungus (genus Sarcoscypha), amongst green moss plus dead twigs and leaf litter. The fungus is like a small bowl with a notch in it; the uppermost, inner surface is red, while the underside or outer surface (which we can't see much of, as we are looking down on this specimen) is a pale reddish pink.

Possibly the last of the Scarlet (or Ruby?) Elf Cup #fungi at Brandon Marsh last week, certainly the only one I spotted in the area where there were others a month before. With moss and a dead Oak leaf for scale. #BrandonMarsh thread post #12. #UKWildlife #NaturePhotography #EKC #ShroomScrolling 🌿

Photo of a Canada Goose using his or her beak to preen feathers on the upper part of one of their wings. Only the head and parts of the chest and body can be seen here; the chest is to the left but the head is reaching back towards the right of the image with the beak pointing towards the bottom-right corner. The bird's beak, head and neck are almost all black, but there is a large white patch running down from behind the eye, across the cheek and onto the throat. The chest is mostly whitish, while the feathers on the back and wings are brown, with pale edges.

For today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme of #Preeners&Scratchers I’m adding this Canada Goose, who was right outside the Jon Baldwin Hide and who I caught in mid-preen, to my #BrandonMarsh thread.🧵 I was very glad that this one was much less vocal than the others around the reserve! #Birds #UKWildlife #ECK 🌿

Photo of a Peacock Butterfly (Aglais io) at rest, with wings fully open, on a dirt track. Each wing is predominantly a deep red colour, with brown outer edges and, near the outermost corners, 'eye' markings a little like those on the tail of the male Peacock bird. The butterfly's head and body are brown, and somewhat hairy; the antennae are dark in colour. The butterfly is facing away from us and slightly to the right, and casting a shadow on the sunlit ground.

Continuing my #BrandonMarsh thread with this pretty Peacock #Butterfly, soaking up the sun on the track leading to the Ted Jury Hide last week. There were several bright yellow male Brimstones on the wing too at this @warwickshirewt.bsky.social reserve. #NaturePhotography #Insects #UKWildlife #ECK 🌿

Photo of a pair of Great Crested Grebes (Podiceps cristatus) displaying to each other. One, the male, is sat on the nest (a platform of water-weeds in a large pool) and is facing the female, just below him the water, who is facing towards the right of the image. The head of each bird features a longish, pointed beak, a well-developed crest of black feathers on top, and a ruff of feathers (orange at the base, turning to black) around the neck; the male's crest and the ruff are more developed and more intensely coloured than those of the female. Most of the rest of the face is white, as is the front of the longish neck (both birds are holding their necks erect), the back of which is grey. The grey colouration on the neck continues onto the upper parts of the body; paler greys and some orangey browns also feature on the flanks. The white underparts of the birds are not visible.

Adding this pair of Great Crested Grebes—the first to nest here in several years—to my #BrandonMarsh thread. Here the birds are performing the head-shaking part of their courtship ritual, the male raising his crest and fanning out his ruff while sat on the nest. #Birds #Nature #UKWildlife #ECK 🌿

Photo of the rear view of a Goldcrest, Britain's smallest native bird, perched on a twig while holding a feather in his or her beak. Not that we can see the beak. Or indeed the head. The Goldcrest's nether regions are however in perfect focus, and we can see the underside of the bird's short tail, parts of his or her wings, their belly, and their short legs, as well the out-of-focus feather which by now is part of the lining of the Goldcrest's nest. The bird's underparts are whitish, the flanks a pale yellowish-green and the wings have green and blackish feathers. The legs are grey-brown, and the feet a pale orange colour.

Earlier this afternoon I was mooned by a Goldcrest who was carrying a white feather to their nest. I am hoping that local folklore or an ancient prophesy says this is a sign of good luck.

Photo of Coltsfoot plants (Tussilago farfara) flowering amongst the grass. Each flower, borne on a short, thick stem, has many thin petals, yellow in colour like the centre of the flower. No Coltsfoot leaves are visible - they will come later, as the flowers wither away; the shape of those leaves is the source of the plant's common name.

A Blue Tit (Cyanistes caeruleus), perched on a twig. The bird's body is facing towards us, but his or her head is turned to the left side of the image. Blue Tits are small, colourful, and characterful birds. The head is white with a blue crown, with a black stripe encircling each cheek. The underparts are yellow, with a short, often irregular black stripe running down the middle of the belly. We can't see the wings or back here. The underside of the tail is grey. The beak, and the legs and feet, are dark grey.

Photo of a Dark-edged Bee-fly (Bombylius major) in flight above a Primrose (Primula vulgaris). The Bee-fly, facing away from us and towards the left, is near the top right corner of the image, with parts of some the Primrose leaves below, and parts of two pale yellow Primrose flowers in the bottom left corner. The Bee-fly has a compact, rounded body with a dense hairy covering which is mostly brown, with some black. The wings are blackish along the leading edges and clear elsewhere. The dark legs are long, thin and gangly-looking. The long, black, pointed proboscis, which is a little over half of the Bee-fly's body length, is pointing downward.

A Eurasian Nuthatch stands on the rail of a barrier in a nature reserve, facing leftwards in three-quarter profile. This is a small bird with a blue grey back and wings, black flight feathers, orange underparts shading up to a white throat, and a broad black stripe running backwards from the base of the bill through the eye. The long, sharp bill is also black, and the legs and feet are orange.
