Photo of the rear view of a Goldcrest, Britain's smallest native bird, perched on a twig while holding a feather in his or her beak. Not that we can see the beak. Or indeed the head. The Goldcrest's nether regions are however in perfect focus, and we can see the underside of the bird's short tail, parts of his or her wings, their belly, and their short legs, as well the out-of-focus feather which by now is part of the lining of the Goldcrest's nest. The bird's underparts are whitish, the flanks a pale yellowish-green and the wings have green and blackish feathers. The legs are grey-brown, and the feet a pale orange colour.
Earlier this afternoon I was mooned by a Goldcrest who was carrying a white feather to their nest. I am hoping that local folklore or an ancient prophesy says this is a sign of good luck.
