Second time making these seaweed & cheddar scones from #ArdBia. Taste great (like they'd protect your organs in a nuclear war), but the #dillisk is hard as hell to cut up, wrestling with a leather satchel. Our guests loved them. 😋

Believe it or not, all three of these fish are the same species… the bluehead wrasse. Wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning they transition from female to male over the course of their lives. Each phase can look radically different from each other as evidenced here #coralcitycamera

Giant kelp (Laminariaceae: Macrocystis pyrifera) inhabits coastlines in some parts of the world. Although it looks like a plant, it's actually multicellular brown algae. It can grow up to 200 feet in length and has air sacs to keep it upright. Channel Islands National Park, California, 26 Oct 2013.

#PhycologyFriday, from one of my favourite spots, from the wave exposed shores of northern Norway - with a mosaic of Laminaria digitata and Alaria esculenta, with some Fucus serratus, Palmaria palmata and other macroalga in between.

Wondering if anyone here would be willing & able to translate the either Russian or Ukrainian words on the back of these photos. These folks are my relatives, one was my father’s sister, and maybe his grandparents. Anyone in my family who might know for sure is long gone. I was born here in Canada.

photo of a gray fly with brown patches and speckles. they have red eyes and are holding their speckled wings up vertically over their body (like a peacock tail). They are standing on a white deck railing facing the camera angled slightly to the left.

For #PhycologyFriday, here’s a big pebbly mudflat of rockweed (Fucus distichus) mixed with what I believe is yet-to-bud Glasswort (Salicornia) that I saw this week visiting Ma’amtagila territory in northern Vancouver Island. Both are common species, but this seemed like an unusual habitat/growth!

More sourdough discard crackers! Using a round pastry cutter for the shapes. Added ingredients this time: Wakame seaweed, 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast, fresh chives, parmesan and chilli. I used mostly strong white flour plus some spelt and rye. #sourdough #crackers #baking #wakame #seaweed

#PhycologyFriday, look at my beautiful dried Ascophyllum nodosum with the epiphytic Vertebrata lanosa. Not my work, but now hanging in my office. I can mention that Vertebrata lanosa is sold for thousands of kroner per kg.
