Bit of a change from the last time @tucker303.bsky.social and I were in Belfast for the @microbiologysociety.org annual conference. It’s been a brilliant conference, with wonderful talks and catch ups. Looking forward to next year in Birmingham!

Failing to do my usual “tweeting” of #Microbio26 this year, but I am thoroughly enjoying the conference. Looking forward to tomorrow.

Really excited to be part of a PhD project with @tucker303.bsky.social funded by Sizewell C. The project looks at sustainable biotechnology and environmental impact of marine construction projects using metagenomics. Ideal for a student who wants to learn both wet and dry lab skills. #Microbio26

Silly question, but I hope someone can direct me: has anyone done RNA-seq to learn what genes are expressed in bacterial colonies vs liquid culture?

We're excited for @microbiologysociety.org #microbio26 to begin but also to share the fantastic news that our @eh-hayles.bsky.social's latest paper is now preprinted. If you wanna hear about temporal dynamics & acquisition of Shiga toxin subtype stx2a within #STEC in England go see her poster at A39

The paper for my tool, SCCmecExtractor is now up on bioRxiv. Highly recommend taking a look if you are interested in SCCmec and want to obtain these elements from whole genome sequences. It also does gene level typing of mec and ccr, even if extraction isn’t possible.

We have a bird feeder on the window of my shared office, which is grand for the great tits, blue tits and other small birds. Also works well for the savvy crow.

Picture of Marjane Satrapi alongside a quote from her. The quote reads:

The world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you.

And our governments are very much the same...
