Bit of a change from the last time @tucker303.bsky.social and I were in Belfast for the @microbiologysociety.org annual conference. It’s been a brilliant conference, with wonderful talks and catch ups. Looking forward to next year in Birmingham!

Failing to do my usual “tweeting” of #Microbio26 this year, but I am thoroughly enjoying the conference. Looking forward to tomorrow.
Really excited to be part of a PhD project with @tucker303.bsky.social funded by Sizewell C. The project looks at sustainable biotechnology and environmental impact of marine construction projects using metagenomics. Ideal for a student who wants to learn both wet and dry lab skills. #Microbio26
Silly question, but I hope someone can direct me: has anyone done RNA-seq to learn what genes are expressed in bacterial colonies vs liquid culture?
Night view of Belfast city with illuminated historic building and light trails promoting the Annual Conference 2026 at ICC Belfast, April 13-16.
Annual Conference 2026 begins today!
We’re delighted to open this year’s event—start by reading the welcome blog from Professor Gordon Dougan, FRS: https://microb.io/4bUkwMH #Microbio26
We're excited for @microbiologysociety.org #microbio26 to begin but also to share the fantastic news that our @eh-hayles.bsky.social's latest paper is now preprinted. If you wanna hear about temporal dynamics & acquisition of Shiga toxin subtype stx2a within #STEC in England go see her poster at A39
The paper for my tool, SCCmecExtractor is now up on bioRxiv. Highly recommend taking a look if you are interested in SCCmec and want to obtain these elements from whole genome sequences. It also does gene level typing of mec and ccr, even if extraction isn’t possible.

AlphaFold database has entered the era of complexes. Together with NVIDIA, DeepMind and EBI, we use ColabFold, OpenFold and MMseqs2-GPU to predict ~31 million complexes (homo & hetro-dimers) resulting in 1.8 million high-quality predictions

Image of a crow with spread wings flying towards a bird feeder attached to a glass window.
We have a bird feeder on the window of my shared office, which is grand for the great tits, blue tits and other small birds. Also works well for the savvy crow.

Screenshot of the Merlin Bird ID app listing predicted bird identities from the heard birdsong. Some listed birds include: Rook, Magpie, Common Chiffchaff, Long-tailed Tit.
Finally listened to @tucker303.bsky.social and got the Merlin Bird ID app. It’s nice to put a name to the birdsong I hear most mornings.
Pls re-post: My department @oxfordbiochemistry.bsky.social are recruiting for several new faculty positions (links below). Broad search in molecular biology/biochemistry, across prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Interested in understanding life at the molecular level, this job might be for you!

Excited for day 2 of the @norwichmicro.bsky.social annual conference. I got to start my day with a lovely walk in. The @uniofeastanglia.bsky.social campus is quite lovely.
Great first day of the @norwichmicro.bsky.social annual conference. Poster session in full swing.
Looking forward to the @norwichmicro.bsky.social Annual Conference tomorrow as I will be presenting a poster on my tool: SCCmecExtractor. It is able to extract SCCmec elements from whole genome sequence data for staphylococci and mammaliicocci. #AMR #MGE #MicroSky #MRSA

Picture of Marjane Satrapi alongside a quote from her. The quote reads: The world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same... - Marjane Satrapi, Iranian-French graphic novelist
Thinking about this quote from Persepolis creator Marjane Satrapi again.
