Roughly 14% of this evening’s Barwits
I’ve long been told ‘Barwit’ day is the best day on my adopted patch. While today was 1500 away from the best day, seeing 520 come in low up the Severn, see the M4 bridge and then head NE inland was a great spectacle @bristolbirding.bsky.social
Sand Point/Middle Hope AM: 9 Whimbrel, 1 Sand Martin, 15 Swallow, 19 Willow Warbler, 22 Chiffchaff, 2 Grasshopper Warbler, 10 Blackcap, 6 Garden Warbler, 6 Lesser Whitethroat, 34 Whitethroat, 1 Redstart, 2 Whinchat, 7 Yellow Wagtail, 16 Tree Pipit, 4 Redpoll & 5 Siskin. @bristolbirding.bsky.social
At least 760 Bar-tailed Godwits were seen today between Severn Beach/Northwick Warth including 520 this evening. Just 75ish Whimbrel. Hopefully more tomorrow in this lovely East wind.

Some more flocks of Bar-tailed Godwits totalling about 200 birds plus a few Whimbrel, single Grey Plover, Sanderling, Swift, Grasshopper Warbler and Redstart were also present this morning. Most of the Godwits and Whimbrel departed on their journey to the North.
So often heard but not seen, this Grasshopper Warbler proved obliging when it broke cover along Moreton Lane at Chew Valley Lake. Back on patch today, another was heard only in a return to business as usual. This image by fellow Severnside patcher @kidphotographer24.bsky.social #ukbirding

A dawn visit to Chew Valley Lake proved successful, as I relocated the Glossy Ibis first found by Karen Wilkinson yesterday. Last year's freak influx notwithstanding, this southern overshoot remains a scarce commodity in Avon. Pic: Karen Wilkinson #avonbirding #ukbirding
A few more signs of migration this morning with flock of 29 Bar-tailed Godwits off Severn Beach a few Whimbrel on Northwick Warth where the highlight was the sight 4 Cranes heading up river before gaining height and heading East.
three tiny black fluffy Moorhen chicks with red-yellow beaks and a little beady eye sit on a muddy river bank behind some twigs
spied these three tiny little Moorhen chicks this afternoon in a ditch around an industrial estate.

Morning at Severn Beach. 3 wheatear, 4 swallow, 1 sedge warbler, 1 marsh harrier distant towards Avonmouth, lots of whitethroat, reed bunting, 2 kestrel, best of 36 species. @bristolbirding.bsky.social
Lapwing, oystercatcher, redshank at the pools. Stonechat in the brambles. Goldcrest by NP hide. A heron got mobbed by gulls. Greenfinch were so loud. A fantastic spring morning :D

Really good morning at Portbury Wharf today but didn’t really get many photos. A couple of little ringed plover on the island at north pools. Lesser and greater whitethroat about in the trees. Managed to hear and *see* cettis and reed warbler. Heard the sedge too but no sight of one. #AvonBirds
A walk up to Maes Knoll on Dundry we saw a Green Woodpecker, 5 Whitethroat and 3 Buzzard one being bombarded by a crow and 2 Chiffchaff. #avonbirds
a brown Reed Warbler hiding amongst some brown reeds.
a Lesser Whitethroat which is a small grey bird with a different grey cap and white throat sits in a branchy tree and a few leaves
a Common Whitethroat - another type of small grey bird with a different grey cap and white throat sits on a twig. This bird has orange legs and an orange eye
a green Greenfinch bird sings from a tree branch
a glorious morning at Portbury Wharf with lots seen including two Little Ringed Plovers on the north pool island which then flew off (no photo - too far/heat haze).
Spied a Lesser Whitethroat in the trees, and a Reed Warbler in the reeds. Also heard a Sedge Warbler.

Had the over channel view whilst doing WeBS.
some of the Bar-tailed Godwit flock heading high inland over the sea wall at Severn Beach
some Bar-tailed Godwits at dusk from Severn Beach.
Following on from this morning's migrant flock of Bar-tailed Godwits at Severn Beach, I hoped for some more on the evening high tide. Within 5 minutes of stepping onto the sea wall at least 100 flew over and headed inland and North East. At dusk another group of 18 were seen on the shoreline.

Mange to capture a glimpse of a Lesser Whitethroat while walking the dogs in the fields in Whitchurch. Shame I only had my phone to hand. #avonbirds

A soggy European Robin, perched on a fence
My Robin friend Henry. His chicks have hatched, and he is working very hard to feed them, even in the rain. He seemed very relieved when I showed up with some food this evening.

Hi Daz, which bird/s did you see today? And where? Cheers!
A few new migrants today but less variety and numbers than hoped for. Two male Wheatears on the salt marsh at Severn Beach and 3 Yellow Wagtails at New Passage provided a dash of colour.

I was unable to match the 16 Ring Ouzel seen by my pal @manchesterbirder.bsky.social in Lancashire this week, but I was mighty pleased to catch up with a single female bird at Sand Point. Here's a picture of the last one I found on the Severnside patch in April 2019. #avonbirding #ukbirding
Out on a woodland walk through Bleadon Woods this morning looking for Orchids, couldn’t believe our luck when we heard and saw 2 Grasshopper Warblers along the way. Love to hear that ‘reeling’ and another reminder to always expect the unexpected! #bristolbirding #ukbirding
Hanging around at Chew waiting for… Arctic Tern, 1, just appeared, stunning. Equally beautiful yesterday was an elusive female Garganey at Catcott. @birdguides.bsky.social
