Given that entertaining supporters is integral part of being a rikishi, I feel that oyakatas should teach their disciples how to properly behave at parties. These kind of talks could benefit a lot of young rikishi. Also monitoring them at parties could prevent behaviors that cause concern.

Sadly I am not surprised by the minimal punishment. Given the Hakunofuji drunken behavior it should've been dealt with differently - later, when both parties were sober. As oyakata Teru could have also forbidden Hakunofuji to drink heavily at the party.

Thank you, Patricia for clarifying! The amount of abuse would be so minuscule compared to all the good this world do. One basho is almost nothing, some have injuries that require longer rest.

It was hard to watch the last basho with so many rikishi injured yet returning to fight. I wish they were allowed to sit out at least one basho per year without dropping in rank. If I am not mistaken they used to do this in the past.

It would be preferable if the original Miyagino rikishi went to a heya with a more experienced oyakata without a history of violence. I can’t imagine what state Hokunofuji is currently in, having to walk on egg shells, fearing another burst of rage from Teronofuji.

Even without the recent violence incident a freshly minted oyakata like Teronofuji shouldn’t be in charge of heya with so many rikishi, especially with some of them originally being from a different one. I assume it’s hard to treat them equally well as your own ones.

They really should split that heya. Then maybe former Miyagino rikishi could go somewhere where they’ll be treated better.

I also rooted against him. You have no idea how much joy Tobizaru brought me due to his frequent wins against Teronofuji!

I was never a fan of Teronofuji as rikishi or oyakata. He is to some extent responsible in my eyes to the end of Hakuho’s career as rikishi and as oyakata. I feel that Hakuho might’ve stayed a bit longer as both if not for Teronofuji

I am heartbroken over this. Hakunofuji is one of the few rikishi that keeps me still interested in sumo after Hakuho’s retirement. After what happened to Miyagino stable, sumo world lost most of its luster for me. And now this. Really hope Hakunofuji is okay

Thank you, dear Patricia for encouraging words! Yes, Hoshoryu is so exciting when he performs well. Hope he can overcome whatever issues he has, whether mental or physical, or both.

It’s because of Hoshoryu’s quite possible poor performance I might not watch the upcoming basho. By the time I return from traveling to DVR full of sumo I’ll know the winner which will determine if I watch. Hope for the better. Otherwise it’s too heartbreaking.

Also wish there were 2 weight categories - under and over 150lbs. Hoshoryu results probably would be better plus I assume it would be safer for smaller rikishi.

Devastated by his performance this basho to the point that I didn't watch any of his matches but the first one. I'd see the results beforehand and only watched the matches that didn't involve the Yokozunas. Wish him to get in perfect mental and physical state!
