I feel like this photo of masked, armed men pepper spraying a pastor protecting his community is going to be a defining picture of this moment in America for a long, long time.

Economic loss from the White House's NSF FY 2026 Proposed Budget
New from #SCIMaP - analysis of the White House’s Proposed FY 2026 National Science Foundation Budget.
Take-home: Slashing NSF by >50% will lead to ~$11 billion in economic loss and extensive job loss and reduced training opportunities in communities nationwide.

They're all entry points for place-based inquiry that leads to conservation learning. The Educator Academy in the Amazon gives educators the lens to connect it all. 🐸💧👥 #SystemsThinking #EducationForConservation #STEMforGood
The Educator Academy in the Amazon bridges the gap between biodiversity education and conservation action. Through fieldwork and professional development, teachers become agents of change aligned with the goals of the Global Biodiversity Framework. #EducationTransforms #GBFGoals #ForPeopleAndPlanet
In the Amazon, every sound, leaf, and muddy trail becomes a question waiting to be explored. This week participants in our annual Educator Academy in the Amazon learn to spark place-based inquiry that inspires conservation action. 🌱🔍 #EducationForConservation #PlaceBasedLearning #RainforestInquiry
The Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) calls for transformative education to halt & reverse biodiversity loss. Today we are bringing this to life - immersing educators in the Amazon & equipping them to take action in their classrooms & communities. #GBF #NaturePositive #BiodiversityEducation
Gen Z and millennial Americans have bore the brunt of rising costs, income inequality, and stagnant wages in this country.
Republicans' Big Ugly Bill would further transfer wealth away from them to enrich the ultra-wealthy.
Enough is enough. We must stop this bill.
we are headed to the #amazonrainforest with 40+ teachers and researchers next week and are ready to get our iNat on! This is a great #tedtalk from the director of @inaturalist.bsky.social

We are At War now, according to President Bush, and I take him at his word. He also says this War might last for "a very long time." Generals and military scholars will tell you that eight or 10 years is actually not such a long time in the span of human history - which is no doubt true - but history also tells us that 10 years of martial law and a wartime economy are going to feel like a Lifetime to people who are in their twenties today. The poor bastards of what will forever be known as Generation Z are doomed to be the first generation of Americans who will grow up with a lower standard of living than their parents enjoyed. That is extremely heavy news, and it will take a while for it to sink in. The 22 babies born in New York City while the World Trade Center burned will never know what they missed. The last half of the 20th century will seem like a wild party for rich kids, compared to what's coming now. The party's over, folks.

This #WorldRainforestDay, we’re reminded that conservation doesn’t always require high-tech tools—sometimes it just takes time, patience & a closer look. #PlanetWalkers #WorldRainforestDay #amazonrainforest
It’s a good thing Congress isn’t alive to see this
Padilla: If this is how DHS responds to a senator with a question you can only imagine what they're doing to farm workers, to cooks, to day laborers out in the Los Angeles community and throughout California.
Today they have crossed a deep red line.
We, the people, must hold the president and his appointees accountable for this outrageous abuse against American liberty.
What part of "I am Senator Alex Padilla" did they not understand?
(Just a guess--they thought he didn't "look" like a Senator)
Every flashbang could instead be a meal for a poor kid. Every hotel room for a National Guardsman deployed to fire at our neighbors could house a homeless vet. Every "less-than-lethal" bullet pulled from a journalist's eye could be already needed healthcare for anyone else. All of this is a choice.
This is on all the Senators who turned a blind eye and voted to confirm. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/09/h...

In the latest NSF budget, they're proposing a 75% cut to the Directorate for STEM Education (EDU), which funded the project at Cornell University that produced the Merlin Bird ID app.
NIH, NASA, NSF budget cuts, FY 2026 - catastrophic. https://joshuasweitz.substack.com/p/the-white-house-vision-for-dismantling

(Proposed NIH, NSF, and NASA budgets would be catastrophic for innovation and discovery. But they aren’t reality yet. The time to speak up is now.)

Tools like drones & GPS apps allow local & indigenous communities to track deforestation & respond to territorial threats quickly.
But these tools must be introduced with local realities and cultural wisdom in mind.
