A barren plain, filled with flat rocks, pebbles, and sand. The sky is a yellow colour; the ground fades with distance from the camera, which is mounted on a lander (the base of which is visible at the bottom).
This is what the surface of Venus looks like.

PHOTO by James Wheeler. A vivid sunset ignites the sky with streaks of lavender, coral, and gold, casting their hues across a blanket of scattered clouds. Below, a perfectly still lake mirrors the dramatic canvas above, creating a seamless reflection of color and light. A narrow strip of land with silhouetted trees and distant mountains separates sky from water, anchoring the surreal scene in quiet solitude.
Sometimes, what matters most is not the light or the dark, but the in-between moment.

This is one of the studies (1885) John Singer Sargent made for 'Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose.' The lanterns which we can see here were painted with very thin layers of paint; this allowed the light to seem like it was emanating from within rather than just sitting on the surface.

Completed in 1903, Monet's windowless silhouette of the Houses of Parliament with its atmospheric array of jewel-like violets and lilacs, cobalt and inky blues, and deep pink tones, appears mystical, as the building dissolves into the expansive, still waters of the River Thames.

'Boulevard de Clichy and the Corner of the Rue de Douai.' (1904) Pierre Bonnard said about his own day and age that 'few people know how to see, to see well, to see fully.' In our visual age, it's truer now.

A juvenile cormorant resting in their usual place after a bout of fishing. This cormorant is sat on a protruding tree stump in water. Head turned to the right after I stood on a twig and was spotted.
Sometimes the Cormorant is black in colour. At other times, brown or with a hint of indigo. If lucky, you will see all of these colours at the same time. Then, there is the structure of the feathers. A cormorant. #UKWildlife #BirdOfTheDay #Feathers #Birds #Photography #ECK #WildlifePhotography

Mist rising golden from a pond among bare green hills, just as the sun rises. Blue sky above with drifting thin clouds.
It could hardly be more Eastery than this. And I watched the great flock of free-range hens in the field by the reservoir get their breakfast feeding from men huddled up in thick hoodies, pleased to think I’ll buy some of their eggs on the way home.

It is assumed the crab was pirated from a gull. #ukwildlife

'Logan's Rock, St Levan,' (c1916) perfectly demonstrates the height of Laura Knight’s development in Cornwall, this work is part of a series of paintings she composed between 1915 and 1919 all sharing an elevated viewpoint, dramatic diagonal composition and vibrant colour.

'Icebergs.' Albert Bierstadt's primary motivation travelling to the Artic was to record the then unblemished world that he witnessed. This painting was made during his transatlantic voyage made in 1883 aboard the steamship Britannic.

Wonderful to stand miles above Santa Fe, NM today and look out over the vast landscape to hear the crowds, the amplifiers from the speeches, the drumming, the honking car horns — and be reminded that so many people in the United States of America care about what we have become.

A red-winged blackbird sings at one of my favorite local parks in Longmont, Colorado. In this vertical color photograph, the bird perches on a budding branch just beginning to unfurl its leaves. Positioned in the upper center of the frame and shown in left-side profile, its beak is open mid-song. Warm, late-afternoon light bathes the scene, front-lighting the bird in rich golden tones, while the background melts into a soft, creamy blur. Below the bird, a large white bokeh orb—created by a distant sign—adds a striking visual accent.

A mother grizzly bear sits on a partially snow-covered hill. The face of her young cub sticks out from behind her.
I used this photo in a calendar a few years ago and was surprised by how many people told me they didn't notice the second bear. #wildlife
