A Blue Jay has draped itself sideways from right to left across a rotting log to bask in the sun, with tail spread open and head tilted back and upward. The wing and tail feathers are blue with black partial horizontal striped markings and the ends of each feather are bright white. The body has fluffed up gray to gray-blue feathers and the bird has a bold black "necklace" which gets wider behind the head. A striking bird in an unusual pose in the bright sun. The background is mainly black.

A pair of House Sparrows perched on a bare Bougainvillea bush. Sleepy bonxie in Shetland

A female cardinal looks up toward her partner (out of frame) as she stands on a rust-colored stone, part of a border at the edge of a garden. Her splendid feathers and crest in shades of brick red, deep gold, orange, and gray are highlighted by her neon orange beak.

A rosy brown and pale gray bird with a black mask, a yellow chest and tail feathers, and red-tipped wings (Cedar waxwing) poses in the warm sunshine as he sits on a wax-privet branch (it was January and fairly chilly). The privet has bright green leaves and empty seed hulls, which have been picked clean by the waxwing. The frame is filled more green leaves and a rusty oak leaf all backlit by the sun.

Two feathers lie at a roughly 45˚ angle to each other and seem to float against a completely white background. One is very large and fairly dark, the other is a tiny fraction of the size and light in tone.

Great Blue Heron meets Black-Capped Chickadee.

A vulture stands at the top of a palm stump, with its wings fully outstretched in both directions. The sun lights upon it from behind, lighting up the tips of each wing feather as well as its tail features.

Two little egrets interact on a muddy, grassy shoreline.
