Feral deer are a pest. So list them as one. Feral deer are trashing and trampling Victoria's landscapes but this could change if they listed feral deer as a pest.

VIC: While other states and territories are ramping up serious deer control, Victoria is falling behind. And our wildlife is paying the price.
Tell your elected reps it's time to act on feral deer.

A pied honeyeater in flight at Gluepot Reserve.
It was very challenging to get these shots.
He was really speedy and changed direction often.
But great to watch. He was calling the whole time.

There are lots of butterflies around right now.
Gluepot was alive with them. So good to see.
Here's a meadow argus (Junonia villida) that I saw at Old Gluepot Dam.

Please ask Minister Dimopolous to take heed of the scientists & pause the planned burns in the Snowy River NP.

'Preferred profit … over the environment': Farm owner fined for clearing 112 hectares of bushland The owner of a farm in South Australia's south-east is convicted and fined for clearing 112 hectares of bushland, but the penalty is much less than the $2.2 million he would have had to pay for a permit for the work.

It would have cost this farmer over $2.2M to legally clear this remnant woodland (assuming the clearing was approved), so he did it illegally and copped an $84K fine.

How can this do anything but encourage more profit-driven landowners to do the same?

Back from a lovely trip into the northern end of Cradle Mountain NP. The deciduous beech just starting to turn colour, old old snow gums & groves of pencil pine. Silence, good company, & long walks. Glorious. Grateful to have some time in this wild country.

If not my #1, definitely in the top three favourite birds.
Unfortunately, only a few came anywhere near the campsite, so sadly they were all on full 500x zoom. But at least they sang that beautiful, sad cry.

This brood of blue-winged parrots are all tucked up in a hollow fence post - when the nest is right it doesn’t necessarily matter to them if it’s not in a tree 🤷‍♂️😍

With 2026 continuing the slide from awful to terrible, I should stop whining and post some colour to lift the mood.
There are four subspecies of the Australian ringneck parrot. This one is the mallee ringneck.

When people talk about "blue wrens", I don't really know what they are talking about. There are so many different blue wrens 😄
Like this white-winged fairywren, seen at Boolcoomatta Reserve.

Two photos of white-footed dunnarts being held in someone’s hand from the article linked in the post. In the top photo the dunnart is biting the hand ferociously, in the second photo the dunnart is peering over the top of the person’s thumb with enormous, endearing eyes. The dunnart is about the same size and colour as a mouse, but with large bulging eyes, sharp teeth, and a pointed snout.

The caption of the first photo says “A white-footed dunnart is a carnivore, feeding mainly on insects, pictured here at Murramarang National Park on the NSW south coast. (WWF: Vivianna Miritis)”. The caption of the second photo says “The white-footed dunnart is found in several states, pictured here on the NSW South Coast. (WWF: Vivianna Miritis)”.

It’s 3 years since the tawnies here moved in as a young couple. First spied them on 11/3/23 in the lilly pillys outside our kitchen window (1st pic). They’ve successfully raised 9 chicks since then (1 was lost to car strike) A pretty good contribution to the species! Mum looks so young in 2nd pic 🤎

This beautiful moth was definitely the standout of last night’s moth visitors. This species is endemic Western Australia but seems to only be recorded infrequently with just 16 records in iNat.
