This is incredibly beautiful, and the fact that the resolution is sufficient to follow the path of DNA spooling inside the virion head and through the tail is amazing

Out in Science Advances: Our #cryoEM structure of HFTV1, a virus infecting the halophile #archaea. *First full atomic structure (containing all structural proteins) of any tailed virus!* Congrats and thanks to all co-authors and our fantastic collaborators! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Yesterday, we celebrated the life of Deryck Mills, an amazing colleague and friend who touched so many of us and passed away far too early. A day of emotions; tears, laughter and gratitude.

The S-layer is a crystalline protein coat found at the cell envelope of most #archaea, forming a hexagonal symmetry resulting in geometric pores. These self-assembling structures have exciting potential for #nanotechnology! The stunning images were provided by the Daum lab. #ARCTECH #microbiology
