Researchers Develop Ultrathin Layer to Efficiently Trap and Convert Light Researchers at the University of Warsaw, in collaboration with several Polish institutions, have engineered a nanoscale structure capable of trapping infrared light in a layer just 40 nanometers thick, over 1,000 times thinner than a human hair. The key to this advancement is a subwavelength grating made from molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2), a material with an exceptionally high refractive index. This allows the light to slow significantly and remain confined in an extremely small volume, overcoming the traditional wavelength limitations. Additionally, the MoSe2 grating facilitates third harmonic generation, converting infrared light into visible blue light with efficiency more than 1,500 times higher than a flat layer. This breakthrough suggests promising applications in photonic technologies, enabling smaller, faster devices capable of manipulating light with unprecedented precision.
