๐˜‹๐˜ช๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ข ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ฆ is a #non-bitingmidge (Diptera: #Chironomidae) found in glacial & high Arctic environments. Larvae survive entrapment in ice by entering diapause & producing antifreeze proteins & polyols to prevent ice crystal formation inside the cells #fly #scientificdrawing #insect

At the Society of Spanish Researchers in the United Kingdom (#SRUKCERU) we've been doing our own #Inktober (with a #scientific twist). I submitted these two drawings of #aquaticmacroinvertebrates! Thames Water rated the worst water company in England by the Environment Agency! after serious pollution incidents. This company goes from one scandal to another! it's time to nationalise it & stop wasting taxpayers' money #waterpollution #thameswater #sewage #pollution #freshwater

Butterflies need more lawns! More than half of UK butterfly species are in decline, and our research shows that by letting grass grow long, you can increase numbers by up to 93%. ๐ŸŒฑ

You won't see a map like this very often on iNaturalist! the only record of ๐˜—๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ข ๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ข (with its characteristic moustache) in the whole of the UK! non-biting midges (Chironomidae) are extremely underrecorded at species level! #taxonomy #chironomidae #biodiversity

Yesterday, I sampled #macroinvertebrates in the ponds in the #NHM gardens with students from #ImperialCollegeLondon We found several Water Scorpions (๐˜•๐˜ฆ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข ๐˜ค๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข), this one didn't waste the time & pierced a small damselfly larva ๐Ÿ˜… #freshwater #taxonomy

Muy interesante! otros impactos, ademรกs de la citada reducciรณn en tamaรฑo, es que las cadenas trรณficas se hacen mรกs simples y se pierde biodiversidad (onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...)

you're right! it's a female chironomid

Yes, it is a male chironomid

it ended with an inspirational talk by Olivier Leger, an amazing ocean wildlife artist who tells conservation stories through very intricate drawings, like the seagrass sea horse

I really enjoyed #BESAG2025 at ZSL. Very interesting mix of keynote & lightning talks. From the impacts of #climatechange, #cigarettebutts & #petfleatreatments on #aquatic systems, to #biogeochemical and microbial interactions, #carbonsequestration & subterranean invertebrates! all levels covered!

Yesterday, I volunteered for @thames21.bsky.social taking #water samples at 2 locations on the #river Brent. They want to compare the analysis of samples taken by #citizenscientists (measured with Hannah checkers) with lab results. It was fun! & I met one of their volunteers who lives very close ๐Ÿงช๐Ÿ’ฆ

Fining polluters is good, but with #ThamesWater, a company with a ยฃ20 billion financial hole, that needed a rescue loan of ยฃ3 billion, that should have been nationalised ages ago, customers will probably pay the #fine with an increase in their bills. This is just another #scandal to add to the list!

Yesterday it was a very nice day out in the New Forest, sampling aquatic #macroinvertebrates with PhD students from the NERC-NHM #freshwater course. We sampled two streams and Hatchet Pond, where some of the rarest #macrophytes in the UK thrive (like Water Purslane, ๐˜“๐˜ถ๐˜ฅ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ช๐˜ข ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ด)

Removal of Psychopharmaceuticals from WWTP Effluent by an Algae-Mussel Trophic Cascade: A Potential Nature-Based Solution? Psychopharmaceuticals are an emerging group of hazardous contaminants that pose a risk to the aquatic environment. Yet, modern wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) do not remove them sufficiently to all...

A very interesting paper about the potential of #algae & #mussels to remove #psychopharmaceuticals from freshwaters. More research on this topic is needed, because some are pervasive (e.g. ibuprofen) & can't be removed in water treatment plants pubs.rsc.org/en/Content/A...
