Are we hearing this message, Ireland???
We could well be in *very* deep trouble if we don't.

This is the issue that has one of my local farmers finally giving a crap about politics. He understands just how close we are to empty shelves and he's terrified that neighbours will be knocking on his door for food he just doesn't have. #spéirgorm
Submarine cable work is stepping up on the Celtic Interconnector, with increasing activity on the French end; I will do an update in the near future.
In Science & Climate in @irishtimes.com, @whittledaway.bsky.social looks at how Ireland's hillscapes have been savaged by sheep and by policies that fail to offer upland farmers a viable alternative......

A son of one of our #1926 census migrants to 🇨🇦 has made a great political explainer.
No chance ANY of our TDs would do similar?
Not agreeing with all he says, but it's clear leadership.

China's electrification bet is paying off. Electricity now accounts for 30% of its energy consumption - 50% higher than the US or Europe.
With 1/3 of global renewable energy capacity already installed, China is structurally more insulated from rising oil prices than most Western economies.

Great article on the carbon tax from John.
A black-and-white photo of the signatories of the Treaty of Paris, from left to right: Paul van Zeeland, Belgian Minister for Foreign Affairs; Joseph Bech, Luxembourg Minister for Foreign Affairs; Joseph Meurice, Belgian Minister for Foreign Trade; Carlo Sforza, Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs; Robert Schuman, French Minister of Foreign Affairs; Konrad Adenauer, German Federal Chancellor; Dirk Stikker, Dutch Minister for Foreign Affairs; And Johannes van den Brink, Dutch Minister for Economic Affairs. The picture is from 1951 but there is a cake sticker with a ‘75’ candle on top, and colourful bunting sticker hanging above.
75 years ago, the Treaty of Paris was signed, establishing the European Coal and Steel Community.
Six countries joined forces to build a shared market, choosing cooperation over conflict.
Born from the desire for peace after WWII, this treaty laid the foundation for the Union we know today. 🇪🇺
But the fuel price . . .
All those TDs and useful idiots can take their small share of ownership of a reducing AMOC. Say hello to Canadian winters 🍁🥶❄️ and a completely different growing season.

Michael Liebreich, recording an episode of Cleaning Up with Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the IEA, at the IEA office in Paris on 19 March 2026.
This week on @cleaninguppod.bsky.social, we go behind the scenes with the man coordinating the response to the Gulf crisis. I travelled to Paris to meet Fatih Birol, Exec Director of the IEA, just a week after the release of 400m barrels of oil from its Strategic Reserve. youtu.be/hmHIrtBZIAg?...
🌍Today is Ireland's Overshoot Day. If the rest of the world consumed like Ireland since Jan 1st, the Earth would run out of resources on Apr 14th.
Last year, this date was May 17th.
This is not just! The climate crisis is happening NOW, and is impacting families in Ireland & around the world.
Wind farms provided 41% of country's electricity in March The average wholesale price in March 2026 was €128.77 per megawatt-hour of electricity. Prices fell to an average of €94.20 on the days with the most wind energy while increased to €179.10 when the country relied on imported fossil fuels.
Our high energy prices are set by our high dependence on imported fossil fuels. The only way to reduce energy prices is by investing in more renewables. Lower prices, more energy security, more peace. Win win win.
Black text on a light gray background reads, "Europe’s energy, Europe’s independence." The European Commission logo is in the bottom right corner.
In 44 days, the crisis in the Middle East has added 22 billion euros to our fossil fuel import bill. We’re acting to counter this dependency ↓
It'll be "interesting" to see where this goes over the next few weeks.
How long is Hormuz gonna be "double-blockaded"?
If its a few weeks when does fuel rationing start?
Medium/Strong likelihood of a lot more pain.
Election in the middle of all of that potentially?
#speirghorm
Spot on Thomas, bigger more powerful, hopefully more capable, but definitely gonna use more diesel.
Same for battery electric tractors, but 60% less energy input as you avoid ICE losses.
AdBlue just adds to running costs and does not reduce CO2 (NOx is only an issue in urban areas).
Dundalk
People equivocating about the blockades can frankly fuck off. Seriously, blockading fuel supplies and fucking up life in general where it might affect vulnerable people is a no go.
Without energy efficiency, the EU would need — and pay — 31% more for energy today.
Since 2000, efficiency has removed 265 Mtoe of demand from the market entirely.
The best protection against a price shock is not finding cheaper oil and gas. It's needing less of it.
JD Vance was here.
Good Q; I was trying to put farmers fuel concerns in perspective. Farming interests (beef) opposed Mercosur which was a net benefit to Ireland Inc, but want even more supports to burn diesel which we import and burn. Badly put perhaps.
Factsheet policy.trade.ec.europa.eu/eu-trade-rel...
this is totally bang on, and touches on something that hasn't received a lot of attention in the last week: our Climate Action measures have yet to impact on agri or haulage in any significant way, and in its inaction the govt is leaving both sectors exposed to fuel and other shocks
The Strait of Hormuz crisis is doing something a decade of subsidies and mandates struggled to achieve:
making millions of people want an EV who previously discounted them.
www.theguardian.com/environment/...
how Ireland looks to other EU member states:
1. enabling massive tax avoidance by corporations
2. responsible for regulation of the world's biggest tech companies and doing a shit job at it
3. repeatedly asking that we be an exception to environmental regulations
Given idiocy of last week from #fuelprotest and Govt (delay, caving) this from @hannahdaly.ie is worth reposting.
Straits are still closed, no new fuel is available, what will we do next?
(Hint drive less, turn off heat etc).
#StopBurningStuff #SUVskam #Speirgorm #ReduceYourUse
Be gone when fuel is scarcer, what we will do then? Rationing etc.
Hormuz is still closed, and it's years to get back to 'normal'.
With a bit luck we will all electrify as a result and get out of this mess.
A good day for Hungary, for Europe, for Ukraine, and above all for democracy. Not the best day for Donald Trump I suspect... hungarytoday.hu/viktor-orban...

1/ A leader of the #fuelprotest told me last night he doesn't believe in climate change, said the climate has always changed and it was hotter 5 million years ago than it is now. I asked how long farmers have been around. Millions of years, he said...
