Can AI models reliably forecast extreme weather events? More-rigorous testing is required before artificial-intelligence approaches are widely adopted by public forecasting agencies.

Physically-based forecast works even within a changing climate, #AI based however fails to forecast extreme events, since they weren't training for that. Testing #AI before using it operationally is an excellent initiative. Is there any discussion about it at #EGU26? @atmsciences.bsky.social 🧪🎢🥼❄️🌊⛈️

Five ways to spot when a paper is a fraud Science sleuths share their common-sense tips for sniffing out fishy articles.

Although very informative & worthy to know tips, it seems another hustle that journals try to pass to reviewers. Journals have way enough profits to afford slaughter job & ensure that the paper ain't plagiarism, mill, #AI generated, etc. before invite scientists to peer review. 🧪 #AcademicSky 🔭🎢❄️🥼

Galileo’s handwritten notes found in ancient astronomy text Discovery sheds new light on how famed astronomer came to lead a scientific revolution

Years before Galileo made his observations of the 🌙 and Jupiter's moons, he intensively studied the work of Claudius Ptolemy, until Ptolemy's own mathematical logic brought Galileo to "the moment when Earth was thrust from the center of the Universe". A fascinating discovery if confirmed. 🔭 🧪 🎢

The 5 stages of the ‘enshittification’ of academic publishing Academic publishing now shows the same decline that has hit social media and online marketplaces.

The "enshittification" driven by the toxic academic culture of "publish or perish". With publishers getting ↗️ profits -alike the music & movie industry- at the expense of degradation in scholars integrity ↘️: clear trend! Why are we doing this damage to #science? How to revert it? 🧪⚛️🎢 #AcademicSky

Great science happens in great teams — research assessments must try to capture that Europe must reform the ways in which science is evaluated. To boost innovation, it must improve research culture.

"Great science happens in great teams". True! but evaluation & recognition still done individually. Papers written equally by all authors are rare, only leader author takes a big chunk of the work. Whatever ideas this committee will come out shouldn't be more work load for scientists. 🧪 #AcademicSky

Whatever "High/Low emission" means here, & putting aside far-fetched conclusions about how our lives will be affected... the plot shows that only one High emission scenario slows down the #AMOC collapse by 100yrs. Shall we aim to reach that scenario? Since it will collapse anyhow 🧪❄️🥼🌊

UK scientist's remains found on Antarctic glacier 66 years later DNA testing confirms human remains recovered from an Antarctic glacier are those of a British meteorologist who fell down a crevasse during an expedition in 1959.

The glacier retreat allowed to find his rests lost in 1959; this's the story of @bas.ac.uk #Meteorologist Dennis "Tink" Bell. Good that the issues with peer-review (PR) are trying to be tackled. Physicist John Archibald Wheeler was born #OTD in 1911.

A titan of 20th century science, he introduced the S-Matrix; developed (with Bohr) the first general theory of fission; coined "worm hole" and popularized “black hole”; and trained Feynman, Everett, Thorne, and many others. 🧪 ⚛️
