Precision Over Perfection: Christine Newell
Precision Over Perfection: Christine Newell YouTube video by The Math Forum at NCTM

Just shared @chrissynewell.bsky.social's 2017 Ignite talk in a @cmcmath.bsky.social webinar by @mark4math.bsky.social, saying you should watch it to learn what her very young son called a grilled cheese sandwich. I watched again and BOOM! Whole thing is awesome. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wc3y...

Portrait of Latrenda Knighten alongside text about advocating for high quality mathematics from the NCTM president.

"Being an advocate for high-quality mathematics means working to ensure that every student experiences mathematics as something they can understand, use, and enjoy—not just something they have to get through."

“We cannot separate mathematics teaching and learning from the social and political realities students experience.”

This feels especially important right now The position statement offers language & direction for navigating that responsibility with intention

You don’t have to have all the answers to lead powerful math discussions.
Inviting students into the thinking builds confidence, ownership, and deeper understanding.

A field where an irrigator is working on a 95° day

"Ángel" works in King City, CA as an irrigator. It reached 95° this day. "I started irrigating at 7am. It's very important to make sure the vegetables get extra water during these high temps as the heat causes plants to lose moisture & they could wilt and be damaged." #WeFeedYou

Notice anything strange?
Wonder what happened to all the numbers?

(…because we removed them for #AprilFoolsDay 😅)

Don’t worry, math isn’t going anywhere.
And neither is your community. ❤️

P.S. How are you using numberless problems with your students?

Sixteen hexagons joined together, each made out of pattern blocks in different ways. Notable ones are
* orange squares on their ends making a central stripe with four pink triangles finishing the sides
* twenty four little triangles in two tones of green
* a central green triangle surrounded by natural wood parallelograms, red trapeziums and pink triangles
* a central yellow hexagon, three purple concave hexagons and three blue rhombuses

The students unprompted decided to explore ways to make hexagons out of the 21C pattern blocks at #100factorial yesterday.

Mathematics lives inside our biggest social questions. Data, percentages, and models can inform—or divide—depending on how we see them. What might it mean to develop a shared mathematical lens that helps us reason, question, and find common ground?
