I’ve been polishing up my slides today for a webinar I’m delivering with Prof. June Andrews next week for the @rcn.org.uk on understanding social isolation and loneliness in older adults:

I delivered a new lecture I’ve been working on today to physio students (intro to quantitative analysis). They were so pleased with themselves at the end they were giving each other high fives. Students - if you want to make your lecturers feel all warm and fuzzy, this is the way to go! 😊
This seminar is the first in a series of seminars we are delivering in conjunction with our INSPIRE Portsmouth for the MRC funding scheme (sites.google.com/port.ac.uk/i...)
Don’t miss our seminar on Addressing Equality, Diversity, & Inclusion in Public Involvement, Friday, March 13th at 1pm. Join online or in-person!
Opportunity to enhance your approach to working with diverse communities in research. All welcome. Register here: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/addressing...
In my #podcast this week I argue why we urgently need to consider #loneliness as a critical #publichealth issue for #Scotland, not least as it affects our #older population and their #health and wellbeing. #socialcare, #isolation, #prevention.

Enjoying the success of Dr. James, post-graduation ceremony outside the Guildhall. Dressed in our graduation robes and floppy hats.
Me posing for a picture with Dr. Chidi Uwakaneme in Ravelin Park after the graduation ceremony. We’re dressed in our graduation robes, depicting the red and purple colours of the University of Portsmouth.
A group photo of the academic staff, behind the scenes, waiting to be called up for the academic procession through the audience and up on to the stage for the graduation ceremony. We’re dressed in the robes of the respective universities in which we obtained our PhDs.
Posing in the pub following a celebratory lunch after the successful viva (PhD exam) of Kiera White. From left to right: Jenny Roddis (1st supervisor); Jaqui Hewitt-Taylor (external examiner); Amy Drahota (internal examiner); Kiera White (PhD candidate); Rebecca Stores (2nd supervisor).
What a week. Wrapping up projects ending in July; Seeing my eldest complete primary school; Celebrating the graduation of three of my doctoral students; and examining a successful PhD.
Advert explaining what the study is about. You will receive text message support during June and then have an interview to discuss your views. We can support the cost of care to help you take part in the interview if required. If you’d like to find out more contact Martha by emailing: martha.pusey@port.ac.uk
This is a brief information sheet explaining what the study is about. You will receive text message support during June and then have an interview to discuss your views. This will involve receiving check-ins 1 to 3 times a week (depending on your preferences). The service is being delivered by a Chartered Psychologist using techniques from Acceptance & Commitment Therapy. We can support the cost of care to help you take part in the interview if required. The messaging service is free, and you will receive a £10 thank you voucher (or charity donation) for taking part. If you’d like to find out more contact Martha by emailing: martha.pusey@port.ac.uk
Calling care partners/companions of people living with dementia. We have 7 spaces left on our study evaluating a mobile text messaging service offering psychological support during the month of June. Contact martha.pusey@port.ac.uk for further info.
NEW: CONSORT 2025 now published!
Some notable changes:
-items on analysis populations, missing data methods, and sensitivity analyses

So proud of my team and all our @nationalvoices.bsky.social lived experience partners who helped bring this all together. And thanks Helen for taking part in the launch event too. So impressed we had over 400 delegates! :)
Friends, colleagues, stakeholders read below … you have been dared.
…and that’s if I get past the template cover letter that seems to think I need my ego inflating beyond epic proportions, and then goes on to highlight how my expertise will be ideally suited to supervise this proposal on *quantum gravity* [insert obscure subject here, far beyond my knowledge-base]
This interesting read is out from colleagues at Uni of Southampton: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
It saddens me how many AI proposals I receive from hopeful PGR applicants; These can read quite well from a grammar perspective but the fabricated references are one of the key giveaways.

Poster advertising a research project which needs participants. The researcher is looking for biological autistic parents of autistic children. There is a scannable QR code which links to where you can register as a participant. The poster is yellow and blue with black text. There are multi coloured raised hands at the bottom. There is a University of Portsmouth logo in the top left corner.
New interview-based study for autistic parents of autistic children (who realise your autism after your child's). Options include Zoom, Teams (for video, audio-only, or text-only), e-mail or face to face (drivable distance from Horsham, West Sussex). To register interest: research.sc/participant/...
Philosophy-speak is like trying to learn a whole new language! Like legalese makes law inaccessible to the masses. I think this video is quite a nice starter-for-ten; something you can then build on: m.youtube.com/watch?v=KA3i...

Picture displays an orange book cover of a book called “Everyone in my family has killed someone” by Benjamin Stevenson. It says it’s a Sunday Times crime book of the year, and carries a quote from Jane Harper saying “utterly original, hugely entertaining- a must-read”. A person called A.J.Finn is also quoted as saying “Knives Out meets Richard Osman”. It carries the Penguin Books publisher logo in the top right corner, and the letter “i” in the word “killed” from the book title is replaced by a silhouetted knife, which is being held in the foot of a silhouetted pigeon perched on the letter “k”. A silhouette of a gun is at the bottom of the page. The words of the title are linked together by lines making it look a little like a depiction of a family tree. The book is resting on a green blanket and you can see a thumb tip from the hand holding the book.
I can’t rate this book highly enough. I can’t recall ever reading a writing style like it before. Gifted to me because I’ve enjoyed reading all of @richardosman1.bsky.social books. It’s a very cleverly written murder mystery; superb read.
Having been the nervous supervisor for the last few vivas I’ve sat in, today I had the pleasure of sitting in the examiner’s chair. As an examiner (like the supervisor) you want the student to succeed, with a good open reflective discussion to learn more about their thinking. Just like today! 👏😁
Very interesting read with useful suggestions for future work. The processes of obtaining research funding & supporting our current funding systems are a squeeze on time. I find this stuff inevitably involves working evenings/weekends & may therefore contribute to #inequalities in #research.

Playing catch-up:
Day 17- Nourishment: currently full swing Xmas baking, trying to continue family tradition.
Day 18- inspiration: my dearly departed Grandma, for said baking (see day 17), but also for her values & manner.
Day 19-analysis approach: oozing integrity, fit-for-purpose
What a day! They say things come in 3s…my 3rd post-grad student to complete in these last few weeks: *Dr* Chidinma Uwakaneme just passed her viva with no amendments. Researching the important area of care-experienced young adults’ experiences of independent living & already impacting her workplace 🙌
So delighted for one of my PhD students today - now *Dr* Mary Amos - who had her thesis approved following some post-viva amendments. She’s had quite the journey researching the social participation of older carers, returning to academia post-retirement to pursue a lifelong ambition. Fantastic! 🎉
