I mean I’m seriously considering it. I think it would massively improve my #health. Maybe I should just put fact I battle #publichealth and #vaccine #disinformation on my LinkedIn profile to dare them to kick out one of the 7,300 board certified #Geriatricians in a country with 60 million seniors

Not like we just had a 37% fill rate of #Geriatricians in the US and have an extreme shortage of #healthcare providers for most rapidly growing #patient demographic, making life completely inhospitable for specialty with much higher than average shares of #women and #LGBTQ providers is super smart

Trump administration keeping #Geriatricians in business (with literally a 1 year waitlist for #dementia evaluations, I'm not kidding) - but, oh wait, he is preventing #Geriatricians from entering the United States, since 52% of them enter on #visas (mostly #H1B)

And I actually know #Geriatricians who have been recruited away and left the US (e.g., to #Canada). The US is not the only country short on this specialty. When our pipeline is already this empty, losing all the potential IMGs who'd come here is catastrophic.

While this is all well and good, honestly, ONLY way to improve my #mentalhealth is to a) increase staffing, get more #doctors in this country (particularly #Geriatricians, 53% of whom are foreign medical grad #immigrants) and b) stop working so many doctors to death that my colleagues get #cancer

There are ~7000 total #Geriatricians in the US and 120,000 #InternalMedicine doctors, so we're over-represented. Small but mighty [and overworked] lol

I was actually at AGS too! but yeah, #Geriatricians here in general tend to be on more timid side. I am...not lol (and it's gotten me in trouble sometimes). But I have less to lose than others, I'm single, child-free and relatively financially stable, and feel the need to speak up for what's right

FWIW, on the other end of the age spectrum, there are a grand total of 19 #Geriatricians in Idaho, the third lowest per capita in all the United States (0.0967 per 10,000 people), the only states that are worse are Oklahoma (25) and Alaska (6)

Geriatricians wanted: medical schools work to recruit aging health specialists Medical students’ lack of exposure to the field and lower compensation are barriers to growing the geriatrician workforce.

Now we have  7,400 certified #geriatricians  to care for more than 58 million seniors. By 2030, we'll need 30,000, but medical schools have trouble filling that specialty.

It's why so many who care for seniors in the US (from #Geriatricians to nursing home staff) are immigrants. And why this country is absolutely effed if they ban immigration and expect people like Elon and Bryan Johnson who thinks getting older is a disease to take care of them. Good luck with that
