„Malta has instituted a catalogue of failures in its handling of the case“ the statement says. „It is unconscionable that the #ElHiblu3, who survived abuse in Libya, a shipwreck & an attempted unlawful return, now face […] life imprisonment simply for asserting their rights to prevent further harm.

Today, three of those - the #ElHiblu3 - still face charges.
UN experts urge Malta to drop charges against El Hiblu 3 and uphold migrants’ rights
„We condemn these unjustified charges. We are also concerned that Maltese law criminalises as terrorism conduct that is not genuinely terrorist under international law.”

Hearings continue in front of the criminal court on 29 January, 9am. Join us and show solidarity with the #ElHiblu3
Yesterday, 21 January 2026, the Court of Appeals in Valletta upheld all three terrorism charges against the #ElHiblu3.
The Court corrected a faulty technicality, allowing the charges to stand.
These severe charges should have never been introduced in the first place.

Among other points, the defence argued that proper references to the law were missing in the charges issued against Abdalla, Amara and Kader in November 2023.
The Court of Criminal Appeals will present the decision on Jan 21, 2026.

The Attorney General argued against the defence's arguments. The courts decision is due on 29 July, 1pm.
Hearing, 12 June
The #ElHiblu3 defence is attacking the terrorism charges against the accused young men, arguing the proper reference to the law were not made in the charges issued against them.
Today, the hearing of Malta against the #ElHiblu3 was postponed again as the Attorney General claims to not have received a notification and therefore was not prepared.
We‘ll continue on 12 June in the courts of Valletta.
Those delays need to stop.

We‘re saddened to hear about his passing. May you rest in peace, #PapaFracisco. And may your legacy in the struggle for justice for all continue.

Malta, a nation of seafarers, turns its back on people in need and instead criminalises who steps up to take responsibility to help those seeking protection. Our summary on the six years in limbo of the #ElHiblu3 can be found here: timesofmalta.com/article/abuse-el-hiblu-3.1107424
Enough is enough!
Malta wants to make an example of the three youths, that only want to have their freedom and build a life. Six years have been stolen from Abdalla, Amara and Kader. It’s high time to stop this trial and give them their lives back.

Maltas treatment of these three young men is nothing short of the exemplification of ‘justice delayed is justice denied’. Recent appeals to stop this kafkaesque trial have been dismissed by the Courts of Justice in Valletta.

The three have shown courage and solidarity in preventing an illegal pushback – helping 100 people to reach a #PlaceOfSafety. Nevertheless, they were confronted with charges that have put their lives on hold – they remain in a state of limbo for six years with no end in sight.
Abdalla, Amara, and Kader arrived in Malta on 28 March 2019, as teenagers. They were met with hostility. Based on their efforts in translation and mediation on a ship attempting to illegally return them to Libya, they were arrested and charged with terrorism and hijacking a ship.
SIX YEARS #ELHIBLU3.
2192 DAYS OF JUSTICE DELAYED.
On 28 March 2025, we acknowledge the 6th anniversary of Abdalla, Amara and Kader arriving in Malta. An anniversary that carries a lot of pain but also six years of strength and resilience.
“The treatment … is nothing short of the exemplification of ‘justice delayed is justice denied’. If you were to consider seeing these young people as your own children, you may find yourself fighting for the #ElHiblu3 too.” Joanna Jebaili, ElHiblu3 campaign

For 2,192 days, the @elhiblu3.bsky.social have been criminalized. Six years ago today, on March 28, 2019, the teenagers Abdalla, Amara, and Kader were arrested.
The Maltese state is trying to make an example of the three accused in order to deter others from similarly resisting illegal pushbacks to Libya.

On 27 March, it will be exactly 6 years since a group of 100 people were rescued by the #ElHiblu tanker that attempted to illegally return them to Libya. Thanks to the #ElHiblu3, that was prevented. Unfortunately, at the cost of Abdalla, Amara and Kaders freedom. The three remain in a legal limbo.
🚨 Disappointing development: The court has rejected the #ElHiblu3 's appeal to dismiss the criminal charges. These young men acted to rescue lives and should not face prosecution.
