This would also effect the Earth's rotation: one Cretaceous day would only be 23.5 modern hours long, so a full Thyrokh year would be 357.6 days. Instead of a leap-year cycle, they have two years of 358 days followed by a short 357-day year.

#Caltigara #AprilWorldbuilders not exactly world building, since we actually have studies on this. 66mya, the moon was about 2000 miles closer to Earth, looking 3% larger and oh-so-slightly brighter.

And that, kids, is why you don't eat fully-inflated balloons. 😆

Seriously, though, I hope for your sake this isn't a sign of something worse.

#Caltigara #AprilWorldbuilders the Caltigara clan especially believe they were chosen to speak because of their strength, cunning, and loyalty. It, unfortunately, also may not have occurred to them that they....

Dangit. Spoilers.

#Caltigara #AprilWorldbuilders One other reason that Thyrokh written language is so new (alongside their poor value vision) is that they're still very literal-minded. The establishment of trade means that they can grasp abstract concepts, but only have a handful that they share species-wide.

Instead, some of the guard are trained as elaborate dancers and given vividly-patterned cloaks. These "cloak guard" are deployed first and flash these patterns to confuse or frighten any carnivores away from the young, disabled, or nesting. Most of the time, they're all the protection a pack needs.

#Caltigara #AprilWorldbuilders Again, as the only sophont, all jobs apply across these societies. However, they do have jobs that no human could really fill.
For instance, being smaller than us and lacking real throwing skills, defending against larger carnivores with weapons is a losing strategy.

For deaths, most traditions hold that birds are the ascended souls of those long past, blessed to roam the sky forever. Therefore, unlike humans, they typically try to have their bodies placed at the *highest* point possible, usually on a cobblestone altar.

#Caltigara #AprilWorldbuilders For births, the Thyrokhys are seasonal hatchers, so the weeks leading into the laying season in spring are usually the ones with the biggest hunts, loudest songs, and the closest thing most tribes get to a real party.

#Caltigara #AprilWorldbuilders Is this entire week going to be me dancing around spoilers?

Well, besides [SPOILER], but that's a special case, and it's still unclear how much that counts.

#Caltigara #AprilWorldbuilders Tricky. Literally the only thing that separates my story world from the real Hell Creek is the existence of the one single sophont species. If any enforceable law exists, it will only apply to them. No other species can comprehend it.

Especially when so much of it is stuff they keep on trying to tell you is solved or insignificant, when in reality it's just been ignored and has been festering.

A piece of paper-like material with some fantasy writing on one edge and the mark of the thieving hands on the other- an insignia every Thyrokh recognizes for the heretic Nokhorox.

A piece of paper-like material with some fantasy writing on one edge and the mark of the thieving hands on the other- an insignia every Thyrokh recognizes for the heretic Nokhorox.

For individuals, every Thyrokh knows the name of Nokhorox, the first heretic. He lived generations before our main cast, and every tribe tells the story of his betrayal differently, but his feud with the Translator was enough to divide the early clans and start a war that almost destroyed Caltigara.

#Caltigara #AprilWorldbuilders in terms of positions in society, the most important for the beginning is the Translator: the sorceror-cheiftan of the Caltigara tribe whose contact with the sacred stone grants them supernatural powers such as geokenesis and foresight.

It's also customary for the better hunters who hunt more than they can eat to bring their excess to a tribal storage pile. Those unable to hunt are also willing to trade food for clothes or beads they make, hence the colloquialism that older Thyrokhys are at "beading age".

Edmontosaurus, a titanic hadrosaur, walks through the early morning mist of a dark forest.

That being said, they are very social animals, and they occasionally go out in troupes to hunt something more substantial. With enough planning, they can even take down something as large as an adolescent Edmontosaurus, although reports about slaying adults are unconfirmed.

#Caltigara #AprilWorldbuilders The Thyrokhys are still obligate carnivores with any plant foraging being used exclusively for textiles. They mostly hunt small animals like lizards, rodents, and eggs, and the small ceratopsian Leptoceratops is about the biggest they can fell on their own.

There are too many people in need that aren't getting it. One day your favorite creative person on the internet will stop posting, and with them 40 people you never noticed or even ignore will disappear too.

The “Calvin’s dad explains two types” meme, inspired by a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon.

Clockwise from top left:
1) Calvin’s dad walks into frame to find Calvin trying to operate a record player. The dad says: “There are only two industries left in America: gambling, and fraud.”

2) The dad shows where the record goes, and how to turn on the player, while Calvin watches. Dad says “Derivatives? Gambling. AI? Fraud. Video games? Gambling. Social media? Fraud.” Calvin says “yeah”.

3) With one hand open palm up, Calvin’s dad cheerfully explains to Calvin out of frame below him, “The stock market looks like gambling, but it’s actually fraud.”

4) In bed in a dark room, Calvin clutches at his pillow, eyes wide in existential terror. There is no text in the panel.

#Caltigara #AprilWorldbuilders this actually comes up as an important plot point in ways I don't really want to spoil. Connection with nature is a massive theme, so expect a very thorough examination of contemporary biota, even some you don't hear much about elsewhere.

#Caltigara #AprilWorldbuilders darn. I already talked about their uv vision and magnetosensitivity.
...Um...
Their sense of smell is pretty poorly-developed for carnivores.

As stated last week, their "houses" usually take far less planning and construction than humans', so the second half of this question doesn't really apply.

A test render of a male Thyrokh dinosaur wearing leather armor.

Some Thyrokh, especially thrill seekers and those in dangerous occupations, wear leather armor to protect vital organs. Edmontosaurus skin is thin, colorful, and easy to tan, so it's a popular choice for beginners.

#Caltigara #AprilWorldbuilders being covered in feathers means they don't really need clothes, but, being close relatives of birds, they love accessorizing. Their Latin name translates to "beaded thief", since the type fossil was found covered with them.

I'm not excited for her either, but in fairness, her biggest problem was trying to build her entire campaign in less than a hundred days. There was no way she'd catch up to the GOP in that time, so the fact that she got anywhere near it is kind of impressive.
