I was grateful to be able to use published mitochondrial DNA sequence data for this study. Recently, new genomic datasets have been published with exciting insights. It's a really interesting time to be studying these magnifcent animals 🦌
A female Svalbard reindeer and her calf forage for vegetation in winter, fjord and snow-covered mountains behind them in the distance.
Our model suggests that reindeer/caribou colonised islands during the last 10,000 years, instead of evolving in-situ during the ice age. Suggesting that the small-bodied High Arctic ecotypes may have evolved convergently in Canada and Svalbard over very recent timescales!
Happy that one of my PhD papers has made it into the light of day! We investigated the colonisation history of reindeer/caribou in the High Arctic islands of North America and the Barents Sea using genetic data, paleoclimate data, and published ice sheet reconstructions. doi.org/10.1002/ece3...
An illustrated botanical study featuring detailed drawings of various parts of the vanilla plant. The artwork includes labelled diagrams of flowers, seed pods, and cross-sections of different plant components. The illustrations are hand-drawn with annotations in cursive script.
A person holds a plant specimen with a yellow-green flower and a label marked "ACS2627." The background features green foliage.
Two people observing and touching flowers in a lush garden. They are kneeling on a gravel path and appear to be examining the plants closely. The background is filled with greenery and various plants.

Reflecting on an enjoyable and stimulating workshop hosted by the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research in Longyearbyen this week. Coming away with a new appreciation of the importance of Arctic tundra biome in the earth system, and thinking of better ways to link field data with remote sensing🌱🛰️
Please pass along, I’m recruiting PhD students to join our Macroecology Lab @uofa-eeb.bsky.social We study phys ecology, macroecology, biodiversity - spanning scaling, trait-based ecology, theory, comparative biology & ecoinformatics. Several avenues for funding. Please reach out if interested🧪🌐🌾
This study would not have been possible without the support of my PhD supervisors Marc Macias-Fauria and @eesaupe.bsky.social , the many data contributors, as well as a lot of people and institutions who helped along the way! Happy to have this chapter of my PhD thesis see the light of day 🌞
Publication alert 🚨 doi.org/10.1111/mec.... Our new study in Molecular Ecology shows dwarf birch genetic diversity has been shaped by shifting ice sheets and climate transitions over the last 2.6 million years. This history may hold clues to how tundra shrubs face today’s rapid climate change ❄️🌱🧬🌡️
Still time to apply for a very cool #PhD position in our group!

Great, but is it possible to get high-resolution figures? The labels are unreadable.
Hello Bluesky community! The Department of Geography of the University of Cambridge is here and we're excited to share our passion for understanding the world.
We explore everything from climate change and urbanisation to cultural landscapes and GIS mapping.
Very useful blog on safety in the field, with the focus on marginalised communities. Thank you @zoomingbio.bsky.social and @britishecologicalsociety.org for this piece; mandatory reading for anyone teaching and organising field courses.

Just a note that I find the BES events are generally not that easy to find - the BES newsletter often doesn't cover them and I have to go to the website to find them.
That's a shame, thanks for letting me know
Hello, looks great! The link doesn't appear to be working however?

Interested in making fieldwork safe and inclusive? Come to this European Geosciences Union webinar this Tuesday, tackling the topics of discrimination, harassment, and safety in fieldwork. The other speakers will be talking about their field safety training programmes which look excellent!
We are happy to share a new component of the CryoCommunity webpage to encourage connection around fieldwork. The new CryoCommunity Gear Sharing page is a space for individuals seeking fieldwork gear to connect with individuals willing to share gear.

Scientist examining a dwarf birch shrub in an Arctic landscape
Hello! I'm a molecular ecologist working in the #Arctic at @scottpolar.bsky.social. Currently investigating the #genomics of dwarf birch in relation to the greening of the Arctic tundra. #macroecology #biogeography Big fan of botany too.
