Neath- the remains of a 1st C #Roman auxiliary fort known as Nidum stands on the west bank of the River Neath. Remains of 2 gateways can be seen, & the line of a rampart wall. Initial excavation showed a gateway for a 2nd century #fort built of stone. #RomanFortThursday #History #RomanBritain

Doesn’t much look like it’s been remedied, seems they had a lucky escape.
Oh that Hancock! 🙄
Not Togidubnus turning his back on generations of cooperation with his tribal neighbours and getting in bed with Rome.

A series of 2 thousand years old sheep burials in a chalk cut pit. Scale and north arrow added
During the very last bit of context recording at #Durotriges25 we noticed a possible feature
We cleaned the feature
Asha and Megan dug the feature
It contained 4 Iron Age sheep burials
We have now recorded these
We will now stop looking for features and backfill !

This is your sign to kill your lawn and plant native wildflower seeds!
A rather large Horse Mandible from the fill of a Chalk Quarry pit. Does this bigger beastie mean it’s a Roman era quarry and not an Iron Age one as IA Ponies were smaller? I’m sure @durotrigesdig.bsky.social knows the answer?
An archaeologist holds part of an Iron Age pottery cup
In the last feature to be dug at #durotriges25, Jade has found the larger part of a Late Iron Age black burnished ware pedestal-base cup
A very nice find to end the dig 😍

Day 4 of packdown at #Durotriges25 and its a blur of context recording, planning, section drawing and photography
The Durotrigian drone is giving us good aerial views of specific areas of the trench
Such as this roundhouse, terraced platform, enclosure ditch, activity area combo 🤩
Want to take a quick tour of the newly discovered Iron Age roundhouse at #Durotriges25?
Of course you do 😀
Sound on 👍

An archaeological trench with prehistoric ditches and a small section of flint wall exposed
Day 1 of #Durotriges25 packdown
Very quiet on site today but lots of Iron Age archaeology to record!!
A mass of archaeologists stand in front of an Iron Age ditch waving enthusiastically at the camera
The #Durotriges25 team at the end of the last day's briefing
Thanks to them and everyone else who participated in the Great Durotrigian Dig
