In a display case, three metal electronic boxes wrapped in brown fake woodgrain contact paper. One larger main box with sixteen switches, and two player controllers with dials and buttons. The interpretive text below the display reads: The Brown Box This "Brown Box" was the prototype for the first multiplayer, multi+program video game system. It was developed between 1967 and 1969 by Ralph Baer and his colleagues Bill Harrison and Bill Rusch at Sanders Associates Inc. For the invention, Baer was issued U.S. Patent 3728480 for "Television Gaming and Training Apparatus." Sanders made millions of dollars licensing the patent rights. On display at the Smithsonian, the device was set to play a Pong-like tennis game.
