Trying It All

Flipping
Everything OA BUT APCs; mixed demand; journal/publisher sustainability?

Hybrid Journals
Another OA option; more OA articles BUT Not an option for all (£); much still paywalled

TAS/RAP
Less disruptive; more OA content BUT Mixed interest in TAs; equity factor

Transformative Journals
Easier transition; options for all BUT Overall little impact

S20
OA w/o APCs; easier transition BUT Long-term sustainability? (+ workflow)

Diamond OA
OA w/o APCs BUT Long-term sustainability?

Lessons Learned:
• If we flipped it all, we might not survive (different communities + economic realties = instability).
• We need to meet communities' needs, not write their agendas.
• There is no magic bullet for transitioning to OA.

My UKSG 2025 starts with Beth Bayley from Karger on their journey since deciding fo head for OA in 2018.

They've "tried it all": flipping, hybrid, transformative agreements, Subscribe To Open (S20), Diamond.

There's barriers to adopting each OA business model […]

What happens when a publisher tries every path to Open Access?
Beth broke it down at #UKSG2025: flipping, hybrid, S2O, diamond OA, green, and more. No magic bullet—just real talk, flexibility, and community focus.
Also: flapjacks and brownies at the Karger booth.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! Seems also like supervisors do have quite a role when it comes to propose an OA approach.

How do we teach Open Access to PGRs—who might be 22 or mid-career?

At #UKSG2025, Beth Montague-Hellen shared smart, practical ways to make OA training stick.

Researchers: how did you learn about OA?
Your story might help others.

Brilliant, thank you! After that did you have any idea the library would have info about OA that could provide to you? Just very interesting to know, since the library is a huge ref point for OA within University (usually), and pays for it.

Any Post-grad students here? Interested in knowing how you learned about #OpenAccess . Was it via the library?
