Eating minimally processed meals doubles weight loss even when ultraprocessed foods are healthy, study finds People in the United Kingdom lost twice as much weight eating meals typically made at home than they did when eating store-bought ultraprocessed food considered healthy, the latest research has found.

As Michael Pollan says, “If it’s made from plants, eat it. If it’s made in plants, don’t.” In my opinion that goes for plant-based alternatives as well. Processed food is processed food regardless of the source material.

As an ordained Tendai Buddhist monk, this is where I see my practice evolving. Thank you for sharing. Compassion is a universal virtue that must be extended to all sentient beings. Especially those whose volition is impacted by the world that we humans have a disproportionate impact in shaping.

Yes. As a Buddhist monk who grew up in the Catholic Church, I have encountered this on both sides. From my perspective, the two are halves of the whole: knowledge and practice (the halves) unified are wisdom (the whole). Thank you for sharing this insight.

Yes. Knowledge and practice are two parts of the whole. Wisdom is understanding and accepting this.

Better, not the best. It is a journey that starts with a single step born from a decision to care about the impact of your actions.

8 months ago 0 0 0 0

Yes. Perfect is an ideal aspiration, but not an ideal strategy or practice. Take the first step, make mistakes, accept that it is all part of the journey, and keep going despite it all. Progress is what really matters … and giving a sh*t enough to do something.

Though there are three poisons cited in Buddhism, I believe there is truly only one: ignorance, i.e. lack of wisdom. The root of which is the inability to let go of our beliefs. Thank you for this article. Gassho.

Went to Shigetsu myself in June 2024 after completing my training at Enryaku-ji's Hiei-zan Gyoin up on top of Mount Hiei. Transformative. If you haven't tried it, Vegan Ramen UZU is quite good as well. I believe they have a location in Koto City in Tokyo. Haven't eaten there, but Kyoto was great.

Plant-based meats that "bleed" have always perplexed me. Let things be as they are. Almond doesn’t need to be dairy. It just needs to be almond. No need to process, manipulate, or change it in any way. To quote Michael Pollan, “If it came from a plant, eat it. If it was made in a plant, don't.”

Trying to make plant milk taste like cow’s milk is a form of attachment—clinging to what was, as you try affect change. Plant-based meats that "bleed" have always perplexed me. Let things be as they are. Almond doesn’t need to be dairy. It just needs to be almond.

Let it be enough. 🌿

Thought is often mistaken for truth, but it’s simply the activity of the mind—just as sound is the activity of the ear. Wisdom lies beyond the noise. Beyond the concepts that thought is made of. Thank you to @buddhismnow.bsky.social for this.
