Normally, motile cilia beat vigorously on the cell surface, just like they do on our lung cells to keep us healthy.

A star scientist showed that better genetics lessons could reduce racism. It was the death knell for his career Brian Donovan had persuaded high school teachers and education researchers that prejudice might be ended by changing how genetics is taught.

This (along with the ethical reasons, and the environmental reasons, and the "if you have to push it on me that hard I automatically don't trust it" reasons) is a big part of why I don't use GenAI - I'm not done learning yet! I've still got things I want to **know** how they work.

Daniel Cortes, returning to the MBL this year as a Whitman Fellow, discovered a new, never-before-described species of Stentor.

He and his colleagues named it Stentor stipatus.

RNA-specific local translation is patterned by condensates for multinucleate cell growth - Nature Cell Biology Geisterfer, Jalihal et al. show spatially distinct effects of Whi3 condensates on target translation in Ashbya syncytia. In vitro, translation is enriched at condensate–solute interfaces but repressed...

Condensates are powerful ways to break symmetry and cells do remarkable things with them. Here we show that in a multinucleate fungus, a condensate regulates translation of a cyclin and a formin in distinct locations.

NSF officials break silence on how AI and quantum now drive agency grantmaking Leaders acknowledge White House role in controversial moves

The National Science Foundation is systematically being converted to the National AI and Quantum Research Foundation.

“I see it as the administration exerting political control over what has traditionally been NSF’s ability to fund the best science.”

We quantitatively evaluated the swimming and flagellar movement of Chattonella, a red-tide alga.
Chattonella has two unequal flagella, and we found a positive correlation between anterior flagellum length and swimming speed. #protistonsky

Does tubulin acetylation dictate organelle behavior? We used quantitative multispectral imaging to simultaneously profile 8 membrane-bound organelles and decipher how tubulin acetylation shapes organelle architecture and interaction networks during neuronal differentiation. 4/9

During #NeuronalDifferentiation, #organelles dramatically reorganize. #Microtubules are essential tracks for transport. But are they just highways, or can they instruct organelle behavior? Are tubulin modifications a regulatory code that guides organelle position or function? 1/9

To me the chatbots pose zero interesting questions about the ‘nature of selfhood’ but dozens about the nature of manipulation. Here the Claude team pretends they are programming the robot for ethical responses but they land on one that is false and disingenuous.
