In #mathstoday, I enjoyed a Durham Maths Mystery with Yr 9. Some asked after the lesson to do another one again soon! I was impressed how well they persevered with it.

In #mathstoday (well, yesterday) I had a 'spare' lesson with my mixed ability year 7 lesson so they did a UKMT Team Challenge. It was fun and I was really impressed with their engagement, resilience and problem solving skills! Hopefully they will enjoy the junior challenge later in the year!

Me, me! And the girls' competition was so fast, it gave me unrealistically high expectations! I am so impatient 😂

In #mathstoday, my Year 10 class and I decided that our fortnightly last lesson on a Friday should always end with a 'Decode the Joke' task. Thank you @draustinmaths.com , we love them!

Interesting figures, thank you. Is it possible to extract from the data what percentage of Year 11 entries are at Foundation tier?

Lucy Bronze on how she decided to blast her penalty down the middle (and score).

“Statistically it’s risky for the goal keeper to stand still… so yeah, I love maths”.

Two fantastic DofE practice expeditions in the last two weeks - Cheshire plain for Bronze and Clwydian hills for Silver. Gorgeous weather, great students, altogether marvellous!

Having re-read that, it sounds like I must have an infinitely large department...first 9 digits 😂

In #MathsToday I set up a Pi Day treasure hunt; all my brilliant maths colleagues came dressed as one of the digits of pi and we had a really fun day - lots of sweets and house points earned all round!

Same for me. I might possibly maybe finish by Easter but will almost certainly do numerical methods after Easter this year.

We've started it this year and found it very successful. Next step is a good way of sharing and making use of "examiners' reports" i.e. what I noticed when marking my 8 questions that might be useful to other staff/students! Any tips/experience welcome

In #MathsToday, I taught a little bit of integration, a little bit of projectiles with vectors and then the rest of the day was in the theatre rehearsing for the school show - West Side Story! Cast sound amazing!

In #MathsToday (well, yesterday) I worked on algebraic proof with a small group of fantastic students aiming for grade 9 in maths - what a treat!

True of practising musical instruments too. I can practise something over and over and feel no progress. But then go back to it the next day and it feels easier like magic!

In #MathsToday "You know the other week when I totally couldn't get Proof by Induction and you sat next to me for like two hours to help me. I came back to it and I get it now, my brain just needed to marinate it" Love the image and so true for understanding maths - helps to take a break and return!

In #MathsToday - yr 11 revision - plotting graphs from tables (Foundation questions). Previously we have used a calculator but there are so often errors with brackets and powers of negatives. So I showed them the TABLE function as well and taught them how to use it, and they did a great job!

I see a starter forming from some homework answers done very quickly! Great idea to help them get the message, really does defeat the object.

Yes, don't think you could have one on its own, has to be conformable with another one! Ones that play nicely together, so that the operation is defined, like you say.

Looks like I need to get a class set of 3D glasses, thanks so much for your help!

Do you mean there's a geogebra 3d tool where it makes pictures that work with the glasses or are they just a comedy prop? My Further Maths lot would love this!

In #mathstoday, we found midpoints of line segments with a Foundation GCSE group. Then yr 12 Further Maths were finding the reflection of a point in a plane which involved finding the middle of a perpendicular when it meets the plane and I had a little lightbulb moment with the connections!

Had a winter walk to satisfy our curiosity about whether the canal is frozen - it is!
Also saw some interesting ice formations in the Bollin on the way.
All lovely, but hoping for a thaw so we have normal school opening this week!

The drive to work might have been less enjoyable than usual in this weather, but the view from my classroom window is amazingly pretty!
