Illustration from an 1887 botanical publication depicting various freshwater algae species from the United States. The image features multiple numbered clusters of microscopic algal cells, primarily round or oval in shape, each containing distinct dark green chloroplasts surrounded by cell walls. The top left corner shows a branching, coral-like algae structure with green and reddish-brown hues. The rest of the page displays detailed, hand-drawn diagrams of algae colonies in different stages of cell division and arrangement, highlighting diversity in form and cellular organization among freshwater algae. The plate is labeled "PLATE CLXVI."

You have discovered a planet. It is quite close. There's a creature there that might be related to a crow, except for its sad appendages. What a good sphere.

And evolutionarily* speaking, we're all fish. So things will be fine I guess.

Many, many species of ants globally. Yes many are doing fine. Pest species, by definition, are doing fine because they thrive in human-made habitats. But there are plenty of IUCN-listed species as well.

A beefly hangs above a purple flower. Its outstretched proboscis ready to drink some nectar. It took lot of failed attempts to get this shot!
With lots of patience and failed attempts I got this Beefly mid flight 😄🐝 I love its super long proboscis (tongue) it can get a lot of nectar with that lickery stick 😜 Beeflys are cleptoparasites of some bee species so their presence indicates a healthy bee population 😄🐝

"Nutritious pollen is what bees are after; many are out only for a few weeks to mate and provision egg cells as quickly as possible." And dandelions do not provide it.
Native bees need native plants. Not established invasives.

There are many species of ants. Some are common pests, some are likely protected.
But you do raise an important point - unregulated live insect trade increases the risk of invasive pest introductions. And something that’s not a pest in its usual range can become a pest in a new place.
Illegal trafficking of insects (endangered and otherwise) is a growing problem that tends to fly under the radar.
"Levels of criminalisation for wildlife trafficking often vary based on the species, **attitudes towards them** and country legalisation."

Our just published research shows that protecting nature works best when we account for how species move and how pollution spreads across ecosystems.
